pocket knife for toddler

I have two boys. One is 7 and the other is 3. My 7 year old has his own collection of pocket knives and he loves them. He goes to my local knife club meetings with me and all of the older gentlemen at the club really enjoy him. It is funny, because he will usually take 1 or 2 knives to each meeting to trade with the guys and he always comes out on top. He can get a much better deal than I can. Anyway, my 3 year old tries really hard to keep up with everything that is going on, and is in need of his own knife. My older son had an old Remington that he could not open because it was so rusted when he was this age and only I could open it, so we could use it together. Christmas is coming up and I believe that it is time to get him his first pocket knife. I see that Bear has a "my first pocket knife" in bone stag that does not have a sharpened blade. It comes with a certificate to get it sharpened once the child gets old enough. I was thinking of telling Santa to purchase this for him. I thought that I would throw it out there and see if any of you have any better ideas for a toddler. I also thought about some sort of rubber pocket knife, but all I can find are cheap looking plastic ones that really would not suffice. I remember some old rubber ones that someone made, but cannot find them or anything else like them. The ones that I remember were a blue folding hunter type knife with a pinkish blade. Anyone know where I could find these or any other ideas?

It's on sale for $8.49 and the vision for the kit is to help parents show their children how knives are put together and teach them how to carry and handle a knife without exposing them to the dangers of doing it with a real knife. I like this little kit for teaching a toddler how to put together a folding knife.

I vote for all three. Jerry's practice knife pictured would even be good for the older boy to practice one-handing if he's mainly had traditionals.

I gave one of these kits for making a wooden pocket knife to each of my grandkids. It was fun helping the kids assemble them and teaching them about knife safety. Once assembled they can put it in their pocket and carry it in appropriate places. Biggest danger is probably from the point on the master "blade", so may not be best for a 3 year old.

This reminds me of my first knife, I don't have it anymore nor do I remember what it was, some 2 or 3 bladed pen style with brass handles. When I was 6 my dad ground off the edges and tips and gave it to me so I could learn safety with it. I remember how excited I was even though it was technically useless. If I had a 3 year old I would probably go with a rubber knife of some type.

10 bucks online.
I keep his real knives put up, Ken Daniels of Queen gives kids knives at shows!
Once a month or so he asks to see his real knives, so I get them out and we look together.

Looks like this is exactly what you're looking for. Read the reviews on Amazon. One reviewer has stair step kids (2,3,4 & 5) and they gave one to each of their children. (sounds like she's a fertile Myrtle and gets pregnant if he hangs his britches on the bed post.)

Thank you for all of your help. I really could not decide which direction to go, so I bought all of them. All together they were cheaper than my one stocking stuffer knife for my older son. I was struggling a bit for the younger one, and you guys really came through. Perfect!!

I bet this rubber knife below is what you were thinking of? (Pink handle and blue blade instead of the other way around.) The asking price is absurd but maybe he would take a reasonable offer.

You might also try soap carving as a way to teach knife skills. I have my eye on this book for my grandson in a few years. Amazon doesn't have a "Look Inside" for this book but here is an excerpt from one of the Amazon reviews.

The little boy scouts I have seen carve ivory soap with a plastic knife, the disposable kind.
