camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Yep, I would have gone higher, and I was planning on bidding more than that on that one too.

BUT, a couple other Camillus knives that I only have one of and have been even harder to find came up so I let that one go. Snif snif......

This is a very interesting knife that leaves me scratching my head.

1st off, I've never seen this pattern with threaded bolsters. Not any of the clones, not on any 72, not on any "Made In USA", and not on any "High Carbon Steel" stamped knives. So that's a real head scratcher for me.
bolster.jpg
Second, I've never seen nickel silver liners and pins with this pattern except for the #80 Deluxe. So there's another head scratcher.
Third, same goes for worked liners (or in this case, liner)
backspring - liner.jpg
Fourth, seller says "Great snap with half stop positions." It could be a memory failure on my part but I don't recall seeing this pattern with blades that have half-stops. (giving consideration to my weak memory, that one is up for grabs)

Fifth, he says one hairline crack at the rocker pin on the pile side. A little closer examination and it looks to me like there's two cracks and the resulting chip could fall out if not stabilized.
cracks.jpg
If it had little interest (yeah right) and the bidding was down under $20 (fat chance) I might take a chance on it but because of the current high bid and the reasons given above, I'll be sitting on the sidelines for this one.

Thanks for posting it Greg.

Yeah, Jerryd I had that on my watch list since the day it was listed. When I checked it this morning I was amazed at that bid amount. I too will be on the side for that one!

Here's one I just got. Not a First Generation but it has the short line tang stamp and Bone handles. I thought that might be quite desirable, plus it's in pretty good shape.

Probably pretty close Tommy but the coping blade is next to the master. So I'm guessing a little later?

.......yep, that should be reversed if it's a first gen., but the master blade has a pronounced curve on top of the blade from the match striker to the tip that is the same as the 3 1st. gen. knives I have. on the later ones it's more of a straight line from the pull to the tip!!............. ::shrug:: ........................
