WTB various grit sharpening stones

Post by zp4ja »

Prefer they be several inches wide. Fine grit for touch ups mainly as I don't let my knives get dull. Will consider other grits also.
Thanks, Jerry

Thanks and Welcome to the forum.

I am looking for more old school freehand/handheld stones like the old days.

Jerry, you would do yourself an immense favor if you went to Amazon and looked up Norton Water Stone. ::nod::
400 to 600 for a new edge - 1000 to 4000 to keep things tuned up - 6000 to 8000 for a high polish. Basically.
Ask others about water stones. They are soft and fast and hard to beat.
A little sharpening experience helps when you start with these things. ::tu::

Joe has a good idea Jerry.
Try the below web-site. Scott "TripleF" posted this in Feb. 2014.
I typed it out. Full of info and products, it sure helped me.

That is one of the best primers on sharpening stones I have seen.
Just the thing to review before heading out to the flea market. Buy'em big. ::super_happy::

Thanks for the links and tips Joe and Dan. I will check that out.
I have experience and am pretty good with a stone. All. I use for sharpening. I have one that was my Dads. Fine grit hard Arkansas I believe. I don't let my knives get dull so it works perfectly for sharpening. the issue is that it is only 4 inches long 1 inch wide and half inch deep.makes It is difficult to hold the stone while sharpening and not shave off your fingers.also due to width you have to be careful not to let the knife slip and hit the edge. Was looking for something similar but just wider and deeper. as always I appreciate the help and advice and I'll take a look. Thanks and regards, Jerry
