Since we're on the subject of home made knives....here's one of my early attempts at knife making. Back when I was into Buckskinning, Rendezvous, and such I made my own patch knife. I still use it when I hunt with my muzzle-loaders. I used the "stock removal" method. The blade is made from an old and well seasoned cross-cut saw blade and the handle is white tail deer antler from one of my kills (the deer was taken with a .50 caliber Hawken rifle I built from a Thompson Center kit). I modeled it after a Green River pattern that was popular with the Buckskinners.

BTW, when I hunt with black powder I'm completely old-school and traditional. I use a powder horn and home made powder measure and nothing but patched round ball. More fun that way.

That's a real good blade, why is it that everyone's "early" attempts seem like something I might not be able to manage until the "advanced" phase?

How good is the range on that Hawken, Squach? I don't know if I have the marbles to go black powder hunting all that often, I think I'd miss the rifling too much, but it sounds like something for the bucket list for sure. The prospect of a miss and a reload is a little daunting though.

Looks great Sasquach, love the blade and story. And that handle fooled me, looks like wood, and I work with a lot of antler. Amazing look to it and a great knife all around. If that's your first attempt you should be turning pro about now.

The Hawken is a rifle. The rate of twist on mine is 1 in 66 (one full rotation in 66 inches). It is a slow rotation and better for round ball than for conical bullets. The reload situation makes you take your time and aim carefully. However I do carry a .50 caliber mountain pistol (deer legal with a 12" barrel and 60 grain powder charge) for a quick second shot if needed. The range on the Hawken for me is about 150 yards and the mountain pistol is about 60 yards. Both will reach out farther but those are my personal limits.

Thank you kindly, gents! That Barlow has been sitting on my desk as a daily use knife awaiting some free time to sand down the repair and test some dyes to see if I can't match the bone in hue if not texture. I am impressed with how well the knife survived its previous ownership in nearly perfect mechanical shape. I can already tell this will become a favorite EDC, miles from such a humble and disregarded state as when I got it.

Yes it is, Horn Handle Scales & MOP Shield ... It's a 1902 - 2002 Limited edition With all Nickel Silver Hardware.
And easy to tell it had some extra attention to F&F at the factory A very nice knife that I cannot bring myself to use.

Brumbly, it says VOOS with an arrow through it and USA underneath. It's from Voos Cutlery Inc. started in 1970, out of Cheshire and then later New Haven, Connecticut. Now defunct and out of business. Made some cool knives for a while though. This one is very sweet, snappy, smooth, steel liners and pins, solid built and looking good. I see them from time to time for sale online.
