Gift Help

Post by btutor »

I'd like some help picking out a knife for my brother. He is an electrical engineer who works in the field alot. He is also a 4x4 and camping enthusiast. Here are some of the parameters I'm working with:

$150 limit
pocket size
folding/locking blade
for everyday use
wood handle that will age well with handling
left handed operation
thumb stud

My limited experience led me to:

Case Slimlock http://tinyurl.com/2my5xn
This is a little too small and a little too pricy

Kershaw Splinter http://tinyurl.com/2oqbxm
I actually bought this at a local dealer then realized it isn't ambidexterous. Plus the quince burl has a couple small pockets that makes it look like a second. This is getting returned.

Mcusta folder http://tinyurl.com/2rkznr
This looks good but I wonder why a damascus blade is this cheap. And I can't tell if it has left handed thumb stud.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or pointers.

Hi btutor.

I an add 1 thing about the Mcusta. They are truly beautiful and well made knives. I have only held one in my hands before but I could tell it was a sweet one. They are (at least the one I was looking at) liner locks. That isn't a big deal but a southpaw may have a little bit of an issue with one-handed operation but might not be an issue. Also you may want to look at the Lone Wolf Harsey knives in cocobolo wood handles. I have seen them online for under your $150 price tag. But I am sure the lefties here have some fantastic ideas about a gift.

I just love to help you buy a grate knife.

I have one and she is handled with stone, but you want wood.

If you like the looks of this do some searching the web.

Here is just one place you can start looking.

I am sure your brother would be proud to show and use this any where or anytime.

I also had my first Schrade D'Holder knife with Burled Maple holes in the handle.

I sent it to D'Holder to see it. He fixed it by putting SUPER GLUE in the holes. Then just touched it up and its perfect now.

I'm a southpaw and needbucks is correct. Opening is fine with most that have thumb studs on both sides. Closing requires a bit more work.

My biggest concern with liner locks is that with a tight grip and/or a torquing action, the index finger could press on the lock and cause it to disengage. My primary reason for avoiding them all together.

If you're open to suggestions, take a look at the Queen folders with Birdseye Maple and a Leatherman Wave for those 4X4 excursions in the great outdoots.

Hey btutor

If you haven't already bought that gift, there is a lucky break. Each day, http://www.covecutlery.com has a deal of the day. Today, it is an Al Mar Eagle with Cocobolo handles. I BELIEVE it has an ambidextrous thumbstud but maybe you can contact Al Mar Knives and find out for sure. It is about $110 and free shipping. I have not heard anything bad about Al Mar knives. It is a bit larger knife at about 5 inches closed but that gives you the opportunity to have a really nice custom sheath made for it.
