........greg, I love the "72's" also, but my favorites are still the old bone-handled splitback's(like the one you sent me),which, by the way is still the only one I've ever seen like it!!!!.....thanks again!!!....I owe you!!!......gsmith7158 wrote:Earlier I posted a question about the bone handled Camillus shortline 72. I didn't get a quick answer so I went to page 1 of this thread and bingo there was my anwer.I came back to page 77 and deleted my post. Then I returned to page 1 and proceeded to read the entire thread.
What a glorious chronology of members who have come and gone and many who are still here today. JerryD it would appear that you have been creating more followers of the 72 over many years than you can fend off. I too have developed a penchant for the shortline bone handles. I even found the genesis of the whittler question. I would like to thank all posters for a great read and many humorous posts. Just another benefit of AAPK membership. Thank you gentlemen!

Yes sir it is. Ya got that one by me at the last second. I put a bid in knowing I should have gone higher at the last second. I was hoping it stayed in the family.

I'll add mine to the list. It came in this week but I've had the stomach flu and hadn't felt like taking a pic.
The main is just as tad short and it's been used. But the bone is real good, and it'll make a gooder'un to tote.

Wade it's much darker than the other one I have and the seller didn't identify it as bone but with that blade configuration I figured it was a good bet. Looks like the master may have been slightly tipped though.Colonel26 wrote:Yes sir it is. Ya got that one by me at the last second. The color of the bone is what I liked about that one. It's hard enough to find these 46 models, I don't fault them too hard for being sharpened down a bit.

Grant those shortline Camillus' seem to be the last of the Mohicans when it comes to Bone Handled Cammillus. They represent a Grander era.Shearer wrote:The holy grail of 72's

Re: camillus #72
Greg, you like a challenge? Here's one for ya. Made in the 1990s, it's one of three Camillus made with black bone handles. One was for SMKW, the Ole Smoky. One was for (maybe) the National Wildlife Federation (to find out who it was really made for would be a coup) and finally the most difficult one of all to find, a plain 72 with black bone handles. I have one and Grant has one. Haven't seen anyone else post one. Took me a couple of years to find mine.

JerryD I've got those written Down on my list and will be watching for them. It is a shame though that the beautiful bone handled knives that made these companies famous became relegated to contracts and special issues. Never the less you have thrown down the gauntlet and I shall comply Sensai.

Dude. Never forget, it's all about the money. Bone became expensive, synthetics were cheap and Delrin looked very much like bone.

The old Rogers bone is hard to beat for sure. I am a big fan of it. That said, I'll blaspheme a bit and say that Delrin does have much to commend it for actual edc. Some of my favorite knives have Delrin scales.
The thing I really love about the first year Camillus 72's is the blade compliment and how they're laid out. I wish Camillus had kept it that way.

I'm aware of that but every one I've seen, that still has the box and some that don't have the box, comes with that little piece of paper. I've "talked" to several of the old Camillus employees and no one seems to remember who commissioned that knife. It's a bit of a mystery.Vit_213 wrote:jerryd6818,

Vit, I'd be willing to bet a dollar you have all three of those knives. I've never seen one of any of the three that wasn't in factory condition.

That old Rogers is without a doubt a beauty to behold. I'm so glad they copied the Delrin® after it. It's such a good copy that many people will swear up and down it's bone.Colonel26 wrote:The old Rogers bone is hard to beat for sure. I am a big fan of it. As for the first Gen's, I too like the blade compliment but the thing that first caught my eye and remains my favorite feature is the main blade profile. As Scott says, "Suweeet"
