Scott, it is for use on a boat or a yacht.

The knife is for cutting rope, the spike for unraveling rope knot's and the slot in the spike handle is for use on shackles

I believe the name for the spike is a "fid'; also used when splicing rope or cable.

A Marlinspike is different from a Fid.

A fid is made of wood and usually used on large rope. A marlinspike is usually metal as I recall from the Blue Jackets Manual.

A fid can be made of aluminum. Among the people i know who use tools daily, a marlin spike is attached to a knife and a fid is a separate, stand alone tool. So we have a regional misuse of the word "fid". I'm happy to stand corrected but i'm not going to try to change anyone locally.

What follows is the text from Dimitri's post referencing Wikipedia. Given this information, it appears to me as if the tool in the OP is a Marlin Spike.


"A fid is a conical tool traditionally made of wood or bone. It is used to work with rope and canvas in marlinespike seamanship. A fid differs from a marlinspike in material and purpose. A marlinespike is used in working with wire rope, may be used to open shackles, and is made of metal. A fid is used to hold open knots and holes in canvas, and to separate the "lays" (or strands) of synthetic or natural rope for splicing. A variation of the fid, the gripfid, is used for ply-split braiding. It adds a jamming cleat to pull a cord back through the cord split by the fid's point.

Modern fids are typically made of aluminum, steel, or plastic. In addition to holding rope open to assist the creation of a rope splice, modern push fids have markings for precise measurements in a variety of sizes of rope. The length of these fids is typically 21 or 22 times the diameter of rope to be spliced. A half-inch diameter rope would have any accompanying fid 10.5-11" in length with hash-marks denoting the long and short fid measurements. A short fid is 1⁄3 a fid length and a long fid is 2⁄3 the overall fid length.

A fid is also a small, pointed tool, with a bulbous hand-grip, used in the tape-and-solder method of building stained glass. In this method, copper foil tape is adhered to the edges of the cut glass. The fid is then used to press the tape, thereby assuring adherence. The taped glass pieces are then soldered together to create the desired artwork."

I knew what marlin spike and it`s use,but fid was new to me.We never had a use for a fid on the farm.But I have used a nail for a marlin spike

All that is well and fine, I'm Just wondering if you could use the gripfid slot to hold a piece of wood then use the knife to lightly shave the wooden stick and thereby classify this as a whittler.
