That Sampler is a nice knife. They were one of the first patters that I collected.
I've wanted one of this Bowie from the first time I saw one and finally found one at the right price. I'm a fool for the Schrade Bowie.

I have been needing a Jim Zumbo 1Elk knife for several years to fill a spot in my 2002/2003 3 tier floor Schrade display.
I finally found one and won it today on eBay.

I had posted these three Schrade Cut Co celluloid folders in Mail Call in General Knife Discussion Forum but felt they belonged here also. I know Cell is problematic but just couldn't pass on these primo examples. The top one is a copper swirl slant bolster jack, next one is a Christmas tree pen and finally a Tortoise shell gunstock jack. Lloyd

Just acquired Schrade Cut Co (1917-46) small 3 & 5/16 inch two blade serpentine Jack. Amazing F & F with near perfect walk and talk. Really nicely executed peach seed jigging. Lloyd

Interesting SCC. I have not seen this one before and cannot find it in 'Cat. E', suggests it could be rather rare.
Anyone else have an example of this 3 5/8 Cattle/Utility pattern ?

I have not seen that exact one either, but their "scout" knives often had non-catalog variations. This particular example appears to have very late jigging. It is an exceptionally handsome example.

My latest, showed up last night from an Auction win this past weekend. It's a Schrade NY stamped 880, which until I saw this example, I was half convinced didn't exist. The Walden stamp was discontinued in 1973, and the 880 went the same way in 1975. All you ever see photos of are Walden stamped 880's, so I figured that Schrade, having no other saber ground models in that size range and wanting to save money, just kept using up the available stock of old, pre-1973, finished 880 blades until they ran out, then discontinued the model (the Open Stock models were all on the way out anyways at that point).

Apparently, I was incorrect in my assumption, and they did make some "new" saber blades after the changeover to the new stamp. Comparing this knife to others of the same era, I have a new speculation now as to how Schrade ran it's production for the 4" stockmen around that timeframe.

I think the blades were blanked, had the matchstriker pulls stamped into them, and were set aside in storage in bulk. As all the models (881, 880, 882Y and 8OT) used the same "blank", When needed, they would pull a blank, stamp the necessary model and MFG, then grind the blade accordingly before heat treat. A couple years after the 1973 tang stamp switch, you start to see all of these models appear without matchstriker pulls. This leads me to believe that the stock of matchstriker blanks had run dry, and they decided (for whatever reason) to start making the "new" blanks with straight pulls. This probably happened about the same time as they discontinued the 880, since you don't see any straight pull 880s, but you do see 882Y's and 881's with them.

All wild speculation, obviously, but it's fun to think about. Either way I got a nice knife out of the deal

These four knives were all in one auction, with some other knives.
A friend in the U.S. bid on them, and found he did not have the money to pay for all of them.
He mailed them to me in Australia, hoping I would like them; as you can see I did.
All four knives came in tubes, and still have the dried grease on them... Ken.

Just ordered up a rare one. First knife I have purchased since May 19. Longest dry spell that I have had since December of 2006. In 1973 Schrade was undergoing some changes which included tang stamp changes from their older "SCHRADE WALDEN" marque (They had actually moved to Ellenville in 1958). Many of the changes probably took many months to complete. In that same year they introduced their 49'r series of fixed blade knives, based on their previously offered blade grinds, but with very new handles and sheaths and some difference in the blanks and grinds as well, but, as I say, these changes didn't happen overnight. In two instances, I have seen the new 497 pattern and the new 141 pattern start off the line with SCHRADE WALDEN 147 and 141 stamped blades. These must be very rare; I have seen only 3 examples since 2006 and I wish I had jumped on one of those. They quickly began to stamp with the new SCHRADE mark. But I did grab the third one which I have ever seen this morning. So I am once again in my familiar mode of waiting for the nice postman.

The blades on the 880 are much thicker then the 881 and 8OT blades.
If all the blades where the same thickness, Schrade would be still working, trying to grind the 881 and 8OT blades down... Ken
