Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Dan Gwynn still does nice silver inlays , unfortunately , all of the ones that I have seen lately were inlaid on "imported" knives .

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Interesting shields posted here lately.
Here's another one, not my knife, I have no idea what the shield is supposed to represent.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
That's a fine looking shield Joe and a fine looking knife it's attached to.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
The nail nick and the long pull that appears to taper in width from one end to the other and extend slightly past the shoulder grind line into the ricasso/tang are also interesting features...You may want to consider posting your photos on this thread as well.FRJ wrote:I thought this was a very good looking shield.
Thanks for looking.

Thanks so much, Jerry. It's one of my neatest knives. I bought it from Steve Pfeiffer.
Thanks for the suggestion, Q.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
I am reminded, by the shield MB posted, of knot-tying diagrams.
Wonder what we'd get if we pulled the ends taut?
And there are two separate ends detectable in the photo.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
This Simonds MFG Co. has an interesting saw tooth shield. Note that this is not E. C. Simmons.
Simonds Mfg. Co. was and still is a saw manufacturer. Began in 1832, Abel Simonds formed a scythe making business in Fitchburg, MA (See photo circa 1850 of the Simonds scythe makers). In 1868 the company incorporates as the Simonds Manufacturing Company and a new factory is built (Shown in the second picture). In 1878 the company begins manufacturing saws and by 1887 they have 200 employees. In 1922 the name is changed to Simonds Saw and Steel Company and by 1923 they have 2,200 employees. They stopped manufacturing handsaws in 1926. The still exist today as the Simonds Industries Inc.
Therefore, this knife dates from sometime between roughly 1878-1922. I would guess between 1900-1922. All blades are marked.
