Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Some good finds, G-dogg!
I've had a decent run in the last week, capped off by a trip to the flea market today, when I scored a pile of knife goodness.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Here is a vintage J.A.Henckels 4" pearl 4 blade shadow Congress with it's original intact leather purse, all for $10 in an ebay auction. It's a crazy low price because one of the blades is broken off. To me it is still a fine example of pre WW II German cutlery(could be a fair bit older, like circa WW I). I guess most other collectors don't see it this way and save their money for a top example.

Thanks guys. I was even shocked by how many I found, and at decent prices too. That certainly doesn't happen all the time, so I'll bask in the glow for a few days...

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Trip no. 4 to the North Star Blade Coll. meeting to pick through the collection a member purchased a few months back. The past three hauls I've made were pretty hard to top and the pile is being whittled down Still I bought 7 pieces. Two very nice ones were a Marbles #2 Safety ax hatchet and a mint Western 932 "B" in it's sheath with a bear etch. Two pieces in very good condition are a Keen Kutter pen green bone and a composite Suracuse electricians knife advertising Paramount elec supplies. Three project knives are a Catt. sleeveboard in good condition except for a small piece of bone missing from the back scale, a Remington pull ball with a broken kick-out spring, and a Marshall Wells 4 inch pearl handle split back whittler with a cracked front spring and a short master blade. Those three were very inexpensive. Good days work. ___Dave

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Treefarmer, there is something funny going on up there in that club. Way too many good knives floating around up there. We may have to send Jerryd over there to look into this. It could be the first show in his new tv series "Knife Detectives".djknife13 wrote:Close-up of the Western etch____DaveJune 2016 NSBC knives 006.JPG

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
We have a problem. We used to have around 100 members but we are all getting old and so many have died. Most of us are or were accumulators and had hundreds or thousands of old knives. Now we have 20 people at our meetings and past members kids are coming hauling Dads collection. We seem to have more knives than people to buy them or money to buy them with. Kids today aren't collecting knives. We had a guest speaker yesterday from a wood carving club. They used to have 100 plus people turn out for meetings and are down to 50. They want us to help them with things like Boy Scout programs encouraging carving and proper knife use and challenging all the media hype against knives. There is a scary downside to all the knives I've been accumulating lately that sure takes some of the fun out of it. This probably should have been a thread of it's own but I just meant it as a part of this conversation on all the knives I've picked up lately for very little money ___Dave

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
It just a sign of the times I guess. My grandson is into knives a little bit, but he's never carried one like we old timers did. He' s got to carry some in the boy scouts and such. His dad and I have given him several, mostly scout knives. If he's ever bought one with his money I don't know it. He has bought a couple of shotguns to use in trap shooting with the 4-H . He be going off to college this fall maybe he will tote one there if they allow it. These are my latest flea market finds.

Wow Dave. Great haul. Y'all Minnesota folks seemed to have locked up all the good old knives.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
DJ, Dave,
i have been thinking the same thing for some years now: number of collectible vintage knives in existence is constant but number of people interested in them keeps declining. Then you factor in the number of vintage collectible knives available (kids hauling in sacks of dead dad's knives), the supply greatly exceeds demand.
But the future is impossible to predict; the unexpected so often happens. It is possible that an interest in older traditional type objects will grow as a reaction to the rapidly changing electronic world. Too soon now as people are still enamored with the latest fastest digital device.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
I found this one at a yardsale. Short blade. It was all gummed up with crud and would not fire.
A little while in the ultra sonic cleaner. Compressed air, then lube. Fires great now.
Not bad for 7 bucks.
