How about the possibility of that being driven into the south end of a wooden handle of an Estwing hammer, hatchet or axe? I don't think they made only stacked leather handles

Looks like the it is made for splitting something but looks too small for logs. It's an Estwing though probably pretty good at its intended use.

It would split smaller rounds, maybe up to 1' diameter. Hatchets tend to get stuck in the wood rather than split it. You could split rounds by hammering on this tool with the flat end of your Estwing hatchet. Packing both would still be lighter, easier than packing a splitting axe.

Never seen anything like that.
Reminds me of a tool for de-burring pipes after they have been cut.

I had a tool that was very similar to this many years ago. It was a 4 sided forging with sharpened edges about 5 inches long with what looked like a guard in the middle and the handle was flat with what looked like an open end wrench for a pommel.Cast into the handle area were the letters USMC. I was told it was a tool for punching holes in leather that was affixed to a machine. The letters supposedly stood for United Shoe Machine Company. Wish I could remember what I did with it.

I believe it is a broken claw hammer or hatchet that has been ground down and re-purposed. If you remove the leather washers from an older Estwing hammer or hatchet the inside profile of the tang is a 4 pointed cross exactly like you see in the OP tool.
Broken and re-purposed. waste not, want not like grandma always said.

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

They don't make em like that anymore.
I think that's a handle off of a drilling hammer that somehow got separated from the hammer head.
The stacked leather continued up the shaft. Some leather rounds removed and it was ground for a different purpose.
