Control Number on Puma Stockman

I have a Puma stockman listed on eBay for a friend and I had a question posed to me by a bidder or potential bidder. He asked for the control number stamped inside the liner. Not being a collector of Puma, I had no idea that the number existed, much less what the signifance might be.
Can anyone give me the scoop on this number? BTW, the number is 72172.

Ray, take another look. I'm pretty sure the Control Number is 27172 which would place the date of manufacture in the 2nd quarter of 1971.

There are no 72172 numbers listed.

I double and triple checked. The number is 72172. ?? I would take a photo of it if possible but I don't think my camera will handle it.

From 1970-2001 the 3rd and 4th digits were the year backwards.

Addendum: The 1971 2nd quarter number has been changed from 27172 to 72172 for two reasons.
#1.) It didn't match the number stamped in the liner of a knife Ray (Paladin) posted.
#2.) As Sanders Knives pointed out the numbering did not match the progression used in the rest of the chart.

Isn't it crazy that Ray would post the only knife that points up an error in the chart?

Well now I knowed I had this old puma 265 a long time, now I know it was born 4th quarter 1980, thanks fellers I larnt sumpin.

I believe there is an error in the chart for the year 1971. There are numerical patterns in all years of the chart except for the year 1971. If the 27172 in the chart is changed to 72172 then all would be well in the world of mathematical sequences. Being a former mathematics teacher I have looked at a lot of these. I feel certain the mind that developed the system they used did not intend for the number to be 27172. I would bet the farm that the number on the knife is correct and the entry on the chart is wrong. I have a really old chart and the "error" is on it just as in the info Jerry posted.
