Anyone Collect Axes & Hatchets?

Just checked for ya.....the highest one sold for $44.00 (with no sheath) and wood overlay scales (it's actually one piece of metal with wood scales rivoted on).

They're nice hatchets Tommy. They don't turn up at the flea markets much, I've only seen one and the guy wanted $50 for it. His was in good shape and I'd say it was worth the $50 but that's about top of the mark. A nice collectible, I still have my PLUMB Boy Scout axe that I got for Christmas when I was 12.

.....mike, I'm thinking I got the Bridgeport when I was 12 (1949),so I guess the BSA had different suppliers for cutlery over the years. I know my cub scout knife (1944) was a Camillus........sure wish I still had that one!!...............

Yes, Tommy they did have different suppliers for knives and axes over the years. PLUMB seems to be the most common for hatchets and axes and Ulster for Boy Scout knives. I have a couple of those Cub Scout knives, one in particular I like to carry. They are a nice size, good steel and have three blades instead of four on the Boy Scout knife.

Here are some I have, the one at top left is an old one, a Collins and that's my favorite.

I showed a photo of a turpentine axe in an earlier post. They were used to cut box shaped openings in pine trees to collect sap to make turpentine. From what I understand they became obsolete around 1900.

I have access to an old printing plate used by Mann Edge Tool to print signs for hardware stores so I had a friend print it. I'm pretty happy with the result, a sign that hasn't been seen in at least 100 years.

Mike. that is a unique ax head. Great design. Also, really neat that you got that advertising page printed up.

And ..... that looks like an old offset printer.
I, and others, printed thousands of leaflets on those things in Viet Nam.

Thanks Joe. It's a proof press for printing letterpress or woodblocks. My friend is a wood engraver and uses it to print his blocks. Old School and does a beautiful job.

I'm hoping you guys can help me identify some of these axes and maybe give me a little information about them.
I visited my son last weekend and he gave me all of these. Some he had cleaned up, some he had not. He works as a crane operator in a scrapyard and he buys all kinds of cool junk!

The first one is this huge hammer with the number 14 on the side. I know it is not an ax, but I'm hoping someone will know something about it, like what the heck is it used for?

I believe this piece is called a Mattox or an adz.
Does anyone recognize this marking?

This is a Master Mechanic and axe-

I am not sure what this is, nor what its relationship to the chemical industry is.
Is anyone familiar with this?

I am unfamiliar with this brand also. Mike, I'll bet you know what it is!

This is the biggest one I got from my son this trip.
It measures about 11 1/2 inches from edge to edge, and I am sure it was a full 12 inches when it was new.
It's been through a battle or to but I'll bet it could still fall a lot of trees!

This little Vaughn is one my son cleaned up and painted with stove paint.
I plan on putting a handle on this one and using it.

Dale the one that says Chemical on it is a Sager Chemical Axe made by Warren Axe and Tool in Warren, Pennsylvania.
(http://www.yesteryearstools.com/Yestery ... 0Axes.html) It was a high end axe, considered one of the best and is collectible. The chemical part of the name refers to a chemical process that they used on the steel.

The SAW is S A Wetterlings, (http://www.wetterlings.com/history/) another very good axe from Sweden. Both of them could be restored.

We were talking about my Black Raven, Connecticut pattern axe. I just got an offer on it today to sell for $600
