oiling new knives

I bought a Primitive Bone Gec, a beautiful knife,but I put oil on the blade and the writing on the blades faded. Did I make a mistake with the oil? ::shrug::
It's the early bird that gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Bad etch usually or in this case, it's just a dark mark using AC current. DC will DEEP etch.
