Where Are All The Remington Knife Collectors?

The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have influenced the U.S. cutlery industry more than nearly any other manufacturer. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today's most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.

Recently acquired Remington RS3333 scout. Main blade sharpened down and has some grinder marks but still has some of the scout etch. Dark brown stag handle scales that are solid with no cracks. Even has a little blue left on the punch.

Remumc - is that the one from eBay (#272190716518) that sold for $99.99? If so, you got a great deal. I was on the fence about pulling the trigger on that one, glad somebody who appreciates fine Remington's got it. Tom

Dave that is a beautiful knife. A little spruce up and she'd win the pageant. That has a great etch left on her and some good aged bone! Very nice rooskie my friend! ::tu:: ::nod::

It is the one from Ebay. Price seemed fair and I don't think most folks recognized that it is the much rarer stag handled version and not the common jigged bone.

Remumc, Thank you for pointing that out. Didn't notice it until you mentioned it. Genuine english stag. Is it that dark in person?

It is that dark. Pictures make it look almost black but it is very dark brown. I have only seen 3 of these in person and they were all very dark brown. As I recall Remington made some that are maybe even rarer that are black pyramite with stag pattern molded in? Some one posted a photo of one awhile back?

Great enthusiastic thread with many beautiful knives shown. Here is an old Remington that I find interesting because of its construction. It's a whittler pattern (sort of :) ) but has three separate blade springs. There are no liners between the springs and the outside nickel silver liners are integral to the bolsters. Quite a heavy solid knife which is stamped R4433 on back of the master blade tang.

Mason, love the knife...a real looker! In great shape. Beautiful bone, great color and you know I love the etching! Thanks for sharing about the spring set up, interesting. ::tu::
::hmm:: Something else very interesting about your knife.. It is a correct production knife from what I can tell from your pics. This pattern is shown in most catalogs as having a schrolled shield. Yours of course has the crest shield. Also looking at the "small" C-5 catalog page 37 you will notice it was exhibited with slanted bolsters and all others show with the same bolsters as yours. My Jobber's price list for Jan. 1st,!929 states it has nickel silver bolsters, lining, and shield. It had the scale die #550 and has the 2E blade finish,( which was Crocus Polished and Etched).Back then you could buy them at Jobber's cost at $9.00 per dozen and at Trade cost at $12.00 per dozen.
Very nice example! Thanks for the look see! ::nod:: ::tu::

Mason, I am piling on to other comments - your R4433 is gorgeous! Thanks for showing. ::tu::

Remumc, thanks for explaining about the stag handles on your beautiful scout knife. I will pay more attention to the natural handle materials used from now on.

Rocky, the bone on your R1123 is very nice! I see that both blades are stamped with pattern numbers. That is reassuring to me to see. I was just talking to someone today who mentioned a knife with both blades stamped and could not recall seeing that before. Like Lyle says there is much to learn and remember with knife variations.

Hey Jerry! Thanks for the positive comments on the R1123.
You know Jerry, What I would like see continued and accomplished is to use Dimitri"s thread as a platform/ catalog exhibiting Remington Original Production made cutlery. I think it provides an exceptional pictorial reference guide and regarding questions to specific pattern(s) access to a plethora of Knowledge by some of the best and amazing Remington collector's on AAPK and the internet.
I am glad you found some usefulness in one of the knives I've shown. ::tu:: ::nod:: 8)

Keep 'em coming Jerry, I use the thread often and continue to learn something new from some great folks!

Mason I have been studying your knife and I really love it. As you say the back spring set up is very unique. I love it more every time I see it. I imagine it is nice and heavy in the hand which I personally like alot.

Tried to show the back spring set up on the #R7500 whittler pattern I have already posted but lighting was off so I took a better pic to show it with more clarity,
Notice how the spear blade spring tapers down between the pen and file blade springs. I also think it has the same bolster liner incorporated together like yours. Kinda neat I think. ::nod::

Fantastic paperwork and related ephemera!!!
While I certainly enjoy the knives themselves, the related documentation almost interests me more. Looking through old catalogs and researching history fascinates me to no end. Levines and Goins are both invaluable books, but there is a real sense of amazement when looking through an old catalog like Remington's no. C-5 to see the vast array of models they offered.

Enclosed is a pretty decent old two blade jack #R1863.

Nice example and yes, it appears to have the same type of outer nickel silver liners with integral bolsters. Interesting feature which could be a thread on its own for any brands.
