Customized Schrade Barlow

Post by orvet »

This is a customized Schrade #206 Barlow with the fancy bolsters. The knife I started with was a new-in-the-box old stock knife from my collection.

The 206 with the fancy bolsters makes a nice canvas on which to customize as the fancy bolsters make what ever you do look even better, as long as you don't really mess up, because then it makes the mistakes really stand out.

I took this one apart and used the Swinden system when I reassembled the knife.
I did add rope filework to the springs and I added handles of stabilized yak horns.
Yak horn is interesting to work with, it works like horn, but is probably easier to burn if you have dull belts.
And of course it smells even more like burning hair than water buffalo horn! ::nod::

Anyway I thought y'all might enjoy seeing some pictures.

CORRECTION ::facepalm::
I made this post when I was tired and after watching an episode of the Great Human Race where Bill and Cat were Ice Age hunters in Siberia tracking a herd of yak. I guess I had yak on my mind but I have never come across any yak horn to use as knife handles. The material I used for handles on this knife was stabilized muskox horn and.

Dale that's a real good looking knife. The handles give it an old world, "rustic" kind of appearance. Nice!! ::nod::

Thanks guys for all the encouraging words.

I hope everyone sees my correction posted above. This knife is handled with stabilized muskox horn and not yak horn.

The yak appears to be more like a member of the bovine family while a muskox looks more like a bison to me.

You can see the horns of I muskox are much different than the horns of a yak.

I was watching the same show. I thought, what a coincidence. Yaks on tv and Dales knife. Still is a great knife Dale.
