Queen City Cutlery Question

Post by Teal »

I have a question for the learned Queen City collectors. I have read the nice history written by Dr. Krauss and the truncated version in Ritchie & Stewart, which reproduced the unique "Queen City" script stamping which (I assume) was stamped on the blades between 1918-1947.

Recently, I picked up a fishing reel marked "Queen City" stamped with this EXACT script on the sideplate. I know that Queen City did NOT make this reel (it was made by the Montague City Rod & Reel Co.) and that it dates from the 1920s-early 1930s.

My question is this: did Queen City sell any products besides pocket knives in their tenure? Did they hawk a line of sporting goods, perhaps, along with their knives?

Or did they produce the Queen City knives (with this script) for a single retailer? I know Elmira Arms Co. sold Queen City branded sporting goods in the 1900-1930 era.

I am at a loss to explain the EXACT Queen City script found on knives but also found on this reel, particularly since it is unlike any other scripted stamping that Montague put on any of their other reels. Clearly it was a special order by whomever sold the Queen City reel.

Any help from the learned fraternity of pocket knife collectors would be GREATLY appreciated!

Dr. Todd
