Here is a knife I very recently sold from my AAPK store. My store description clearly stated the knife had 2 patches in the bone handles. One patch on the mark side and one on the pile side. The knife sold to this eBay seller for $35 plus shipping. Not a counterfeit knife but far from excellent condition IMO.

Somehow this eBay seller has forgotten about the handle patches and left it out of his description.

The handle patches are expertly done. I'm not sure if i can ID the correct areas. However that does not excuse dishonesty. Ebay seller is already at 300%+ profit, 4 days to go.
I stopped buying from that seller a few years ago. The description always exceeded the knife, not the type of seller i want to deal with. There are plenty of knife sellers with absolute integrity to supply all the knives i will ever want.

Too bad he does not mention them especially since he definitely knows about it.

He also has a store here at AAPK I have bought several knives from him over the years and never had a problem.

Amazing how these guys keep 100% feedback. Makes you wonder if anybody ever sends a knife back. Maybe that is part of the problem?

He's a knife mechanic. His instructions for bidding and paying are far more voluminous than his item descriptions.

He has left terribly offensive negative and reply feedback on Ebay in the past.

I bought a bone handled EZ open knife from him once, he sent a plastic handled knife which was not the knife in the auction photos and denied he had done so.

I never look at his auctions.

I know about Bob, the seller, he is a member of the NCCA and I see him each year in Mystic for the show. Charlie, he is not the mechanic but has a close friend that is. I have sold knives to him at the show and don't usually buy from him. A friend bought a knife from him for me once as a gift and it was a piece that was put together from some old Canastota blades he had. I told him the knife was not right and got all kinds of grief over it. He did finally take it back though. I don't usually buy from him anymore either but!!!

I love lockback/English jack type knives and he has one up now on ebay, link below. If we can forget about him for a moment and his selling habits and look this knife over and tell me if you think it's right. I like the knife but the blade seems odd to me in the frame???

Blade looks wrong for that knife. I would expect a Spearpoint but it has a Clip blade. Also look how long pull ends a bit unevenly into the tang and through the markings. That does not look like the work of an old time Sheffield cutler.

Mike, I looked at the pictures in the auction and the blade looks wrong to me as a knife mechanic.
I know doodly squat about Empire knives, but if you look at the last picture with the blade open end the knife setting on the springs. Look at the kick of the blade, or should I say here the kick should have been, since it all appears to have been ground off.

It looks to me like that blade once had a pretty good size kick that has been ground down so the blade won't sit proud. That last pic appears to me as if the kick had been ground or filed off at an angle.
As I said I don't know much about Empire knives, but from the picture it certainly appears to me that kick has been filed to lower the blade.

Another thing I notice is the nail nick is cut down into the tang, and it actually cuts into the last 'E' in Empire.
Is that normal for Empire?

Thanks guys, Yes I noticed the kick being ground after I sent the question. I am not too worried about the pull going through the tang the way it does but yes I think blade was not born with that frame!! I will let it pass like I figured before I sent the question.

Buyer beware for sure with him!!

There is a review on bladeforums.com below the review there is avery nice collection of empires. This lock back I pictured there although the shield looks slightly different.

Old Sheffield knives (and a few others) do have long pulls that extend into the tang. On this knife the end of the pull in the tang is sloppy, a bit wider than it should be. On Sheffield knives (i.e. professional cutler's work) the end of the long pull is very precise and square. How the long pull in o.p. knife ends shows what i think is amateur cutlery work.
Anyway it already has been concluded: FAKE !
We must not let what we want a knife to be affect our assessment of what a knife actually shows. (BRL)
