First post, looking for info old Browning "Made in Germany"

Hello guys!

I'm 41 years old and have been collecting knives off and on my entire life. I apologize for my first post being a question but this knife is hard to find info on to say the least. The last few years I have been buying almost exclusively older Buck 110's or 110's from the Busck Custom Shop.

This Browning knife was given to me by a friend who was told its a pretty old knife. Seeing I've never owned a Browning knife before. There is no numbers or anything that would even point to a model number. The handle resembles a Buck 110 with a wood handle and brass bolsters. The only visible markings on the knife is the "Browning Made in Germany" on the blade.

I was curious if any of you here could share some info on this knife or possibly point me to a source? Im just wondering what it is I have here. The knife does look old but is in very good condition. Thanks in advance for any help on this and I have really enjoyed reading through all the various threads here.

We really need pictures - Browning Arms Company, in the 20th and 21st centuries, has been an international company with their firearm line and their other products (knives especially) sourced from all over the world. You will find almost every country that has a respected cutlery industry has made some type of knife with the Browning name on it. Pictures will certainly help narrow it down. OH

Mack, that looks like a Browning catalog #3218F Folding Stalker II. You can find it on page 80 of the 1982 Browning Catalog. Blade is made of 440C stainless steel, the OAL (closed) is 4-1/4", the blade is 3-1/4" long, the handles are Tropical Rosewood. Should have a leather sheath with it. I have a 1985 retail price list, it was still listed but the model number had changed to #510 - had a retail of $47.95. I owned a very similar Browning knife made in Japan and another one made in the USA, but never owned one made in Germany. That's about all I can tell you other than that is the same steel Buck used until about 1980 for their 110 Folding Hunter and 112 Ranger. I would venture to say that Browning found the competition from Buck (and Schrade) to be formidable in that style hunting knife, as the Browning run life was comparatively short. OH

Cato, I think the 4018F was about 1/2" longer than the 3218F (look at the blade style, slightly different). OH

Wow ! $47.95 in 1985 was very expensive for a knife. I do not know the 1985 price for a Buck 110 or a Schrade LB7, but likely this Browning was close to double the price of those two.
According to Bernard Levine the Browning USA knives are the most collectible, followed by Browning Germany and then Browning Japan. "Most collectible" = most expensive now. But who cares ? I have examples of all 3 country of origin Brownings and all are well made good knives, so if shopping for a Browning buy what appeals to you regardless of where it was made.

Thank you so much Guys! I am going to love it here! Im not as curious as to the knifes worth as I am as how old you guys think it might be. DO any of you Know an approximate date or time period this "Made in Germany" knife might have been made during? Either way thanks a million.

Next week I should be getting my 110 in from the Custom Shop so I'll be sure to post pictures of that.

Old Hunter above says that your knife is in the 1982 and 1985 Browning catalog so that gives the age of your knife. Browning had knives made in Germany for only a few years so your knife is not much older than 1982 or much younger than 1985.

If your knife is 4-1/4" long , it would be the highlighted knife . If it is 4-7/8" long it would be the 4018F (4th down from the top of the list . (courtesy of Knife World May 2010)

The German knife with the flat grind blade looks a lot like the Boker folding hunter products. I wonder if Boker made them for Browning?

The Knife World article said that no one could find out which German company was commissioned to manufacture these knives .
