This one was made by Schrade as well. Always liked Schrade's jigging.

How about this old gal...the whale logo is associated with Richartz, Solingen...not sure how old this is, but it sure has seen some pocket time. cheers

The bone on that Thomaston reminds me of old Camillus bone B,nice knife.

Joe beautiful knife,and that jigging is typical for Empire. Here are some Empire made .First two on the left are Shapleighs,a DE and the old one in the middle is an AF Shapleigh(old,different jigging,pick bone. probably late 1800s).The DE shows the Empire jigging ,like Joe's.

The far right is marked Empire,jigging is consistent,but worn. Norvell Shapleigh was the exclusive southern and western distributor of Empire knives. You could get most all patterns marked with either stamp.

I have another that is marked S Norvell (Saunders Norvell) which also is Empire made,but is too worn to show the jigging.

.... To me it is quite interesting how the jigging pattern can be recognized as to different makers.... I wonder if it was the tool they used to do the jigging?.. If it was the same guy at each company doing the work than maybe one would expect a similar end product but obviously that was not the case...

Lyle - you really got me interested in farmer's jacks but I've never even seen one for sale... You must have the world supply

Thanks Tommy,Ralph,Joe ,Ken ,Lee. Lee ,there are 2 or 3 for sale on eBay.

Ken ,those I posted are farmers jacks,aka rooster combs.

Here is a Shapleigh whittler,same frame as the farmers jacks.It is also an Empire made knife.Voyles cut shown has it 4" ,actually this knife and the farmers jacks on the same frame are 4 1/8" in length,as are Schrade farmers jacks.

I always thought these 2 Miller Bros knives would have made a nice set to be sold in the old days (and no I bought them on separate occasions) - the jigging looks very similar to my eye though the scales are different colors between them... I actually like those reddish brown scales on the Jumbo Jack... note the bolsters are iron on the jumbo and nickel silver on the wharncliffe... (I'll post some other pics of these 2 knives with blades open in the other threads where they fit.)

Well here's something interesting and referred to by Lyle in the Farmer's jack thread... check the pile side of the MB Wharncliffe as to scale color... darker and almost a match to the Jumbo Jack scales (mark and pile side) - so do these knives date to about the same time of production (similarity in jigging and scales

)... BTW - the other pics of knife will be posted - I think a Wharncliffe thread needs to be initiated as I can't find one
