I love Lonesome Dove. Tommy Lee Jones is one of my favorite actors as is Robert Duval.

Went with the wife and some friends last night to see The Revenant. Very powerful but graphic movie, not for the faint hearted! (not for children either!) My wife couldn't watch much of it (covered her eyes ). DeCaprio does a great job as the lead character Hugh Glass. He's on screen most of the film but has little dialog, since much of the time he's alone in the frozen wilderness. No voice-over narrative either so as an actor he has to convey what's going on to the audience through his actions and facial expressions. Tom Hardy is also great as the villain Fitzgerald - move over Bruce Dern! I wouldn't call it a traditional Western. More mountain man like Jeramiah Johnson but more violent, without any humor.

I agree Lonesmome Dove is the best TV mini-series. In fact I'd say it's the best of any genre, not just Westerns. My choice for next best is The Good Old Boys, based on the novel of the same name written by Elmer Kelton. For any not familiar with it, the cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shepard, Francis McDermond, Wifred Brimley, and a very young Matt Damon. Great story, lots of humor and as best I recall not a shot fired.
Kelton said the characters were based on real-life cowboys he knew while growing up on a Texas ranch, and stories he heard from them.

Kelton was a West Texan from San Angelo. He worked on the San Angelo Standard Times and was a prolific author. Lots of good ol' boy stories. I liked his The Time It Never Rained since it was about the drought of the 1950s when I was growing up in the middle of it.

Kelton is my favorite author, Ray. In addition to collecting pocket knives, I collect his books! I think I've read every book he's written at least once. Also had the honor and pleasure of meeting him several years ago. A wonderful, down-to-earth gentleman.

Nice collection of books. I had to try twice to read the book to which I referred, The Time It Never Rained. First time I just couldn't get into it. Went back about a year later and read it through with no hang-ups.

I am just watching the last few minutes of In Harm's Way. I taped the last hour or so of the movie. I know it is not a western but it is the Duke and it is a dandy movie.

Hope she enjoys them Tommy. Kelton's formula has been to take a little known actual historical event and write a novel using that as its theme. IMHO his best were some of his earlier works such as The Day the Cowboys Quit, The Wolf and the Buffalo, and The Good Old Boys. As one critic said, Kelton doesn't write Westerns, he writes novels set in the West. In most of his books there's not a shot fired.

Most of the great westerns have been mentioned on this thread so just a few comments. I enjoyed "The Wild Bunch." Thought the walk down the street to the final fight was classic. It introduced a level of violence not previously seen in westerns.

Wayne gave one of his best acting performances in "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon." Very convincing as a cavalry Cpt. near retirement. I recall reading long ago that Wayne himself considered it his best work.

I was a kid at the time, but always enjoyed the Randolph Scott westerns.

Of the countless movies about Jesse James I thought the best was "The Long Riders."

Maybe he was joking? Buzz is indeed Jim Parker’s son, James Junior. I don’t know him but I knew his father (not well but we were acquainted - I bought and traded knives with him). IIRC his father’s name was John.

Well that little rascal. I would never have thought about that potential connection had he not said something, and he sounded serious. I guess it made for a better story, I think they might have been talking about a Case fixed blade.
