Re: Combination Knife Sets
I'm really loving all the posts in this thread. The box sets are awesome. Double sheaths with folders and fixed blades knives. Knives with tools! Scouts sets, knives marketed for kids all awesome!
This really isn't a combination set but I think I can sneak it in here.

I would agree that the whittling kit fits in with the theme of this great thread. Wayne, the whittling set is fantastic condition, what kid would have got a set like that and left it barely used in the box??

Re: Combination Knife Sets
Probably belonged to Ralphie Parker (the kid from the movie A Christmas Story). Instead of his mother saying "you'll shoot your eye out!" with the BB gun, it was "you'll cut your finger off!" with the pocket knife!danno50 wrote:I would agree that the whittling kit fits in with the theme of this great thread. I wonder if that originally came in a set like the one I posted by ImperialMason wrote:Colonial made a sheath knife and folding camp knife set similar to Imperial, but this is the only large and small sheath knife set that I have seen.

Re: Combination Knife Sets
Robeson made several knife sets, including two knives, knife ax pair and possibly a three knife set. I do not have any photos, but might can come up with some catalog cuts. I've never seen a Robeson set with a straight and folding knife.
Seems to me there was an Official (maybe unofficial) Boy Scout slide apart wooden handled knife and fork dining set that I've seen on Ebay, new in the box. Don't recall the maker, but I'm thinking L. F. & C. Each utensil fit into the handle of the other.
Maybe ScoutKnives knows what I'm talking about.

Re: Combination Knife Sets
You would be correct Charlie.....Landers, Frary & Clark made a knife and fork set that came with a 4-blade matching pocket knife......here's a picture of the knife, fork and box but was missing the "Trooper" pocket knife.

Never saw one of those before;a neat item! I have several knife/fork sets similar to that;a couple of which were made by Edward Wusthof. One of these has pearl scales and the other ivory. Also an unmarked set with plastic handles and another with wood handles.bestgear wrote:You would be correct Charlie.....Landers, Frary & Clark made a knife and fork set that came with a 4-blade matching pocket knife......here's a picture of the knife, fork and box but was missing the "Trooper" pocket knife.
The other pic is an unmarked folding knife/fork with the fork sitting along the back spring and a Hubertus take down knife.

Great set which I had not seen before. Did all of these Scout marked sets originally come with a folding Scout knife?bestgear wrote:You would be correct Charlie.....Landers, Frary & Clark made a knife and fork set that came with a 4-blade matching pocket knife......here's a picture of the knife, fork and box but was missing the "Trooper" pocket knife.

Not sure about any date on this set but gut feeling is 50's-60's vintage.Mason wrote:Very cool set, do you know the date on this one?btrwtr wrote:I'm really loving all the posts in this thread. Re: Combination Knife Sets
I like that one, Dimitri.
Interestingly, I made a search through my Robeson catalogs. Robeson appears to have made very few hunting knives prior to WWII. They do not appear, at all, in the early catalog that David Clark reproduced last year. All kinds of straight knives for kitchen and table, but no sheath knives.
However, they had to have produced them during the 1930's or 40's, as knives like the Jimmy Allen "Outing" knife and other bone handled knives I've seen definitely predate WWII.
They had contracts to produce several military issue knives during WWII and possibly Korean Conflict, all of which had stacked/compressed leather washer handles. Maybe after tooling up for those, they saw a chance to enter the hunting knife market, indeed, at least one of their postwar sheath knives was the same as a Navy Mark I.
Also, having Emerson Case come from Kinfolks might be a reason, as Kinfolks was heavily into that market before and he just introduced that sort of line to their inventory.

Re: Combination Knife Sets
Imperial Knife Set 1954-1988 are the dates Goins gives for this tang stamping. i just recently acquired this and as the sole bidder it was not expensive. The leather sheath holds a 8 1/4" Fixed Blade with a 2 piece plastic handle and a 3 3/4" "Kamp-King" 4 blade Utility folder.
I bought it because it is a nice example of the type of knife that was in hardware stores in the 1950's that boys like myself could afford to buy with money from a paper route. Excuse the aside but times really were better when you could get outside as a kid and earn your own money.
This set is not the same as the knives i recall; the handle on the FB is more modern, so my guess is this one is from 1970's.

Breaking from factory to custom knives. Here is a set I made several years ago. It was made for the son of a friend of mine that was in the Air Force and stationed in middle east at the time. The bone on the little knife was dyed and jigged by TX. knife making legend Clyde Fischer.
