use a loop and look for blood veins. synthetics won't have any. do not stick it with a hot pin.

Lacking a loupe, you can also place the cutting edge of a thin, sharp blade at a 90 degree angle...resting on the handle material...and drag sideways. If it slides easily like ice it's bone. If it catches/drags, it's synthetic.

Use a UV light. Most older bone handles will fluoresce green when exposed to a UV light source, especially around the parts where the dye is a bit lighter. A black light bulb will work, or use one of those keychain lights sold at places like Wallyworld for detecting counterfeit bills.

Thanks RC for the date, I have a couple of bone Kutmasters that are nice was wanting to know the age on them. They could be older but now I know they are at least 50 years old.
