Schrade - Wilbert ???

Let it be known,I trust this seller. He is honest and sells nice stuff.

Anybody know when they started making the 3 7/8" frame. I can't find it in the Catalog E with supplements until 1938 supp. No. 81004 3/8Stg

Reason I'm asking is there is a "unique" pruner marked Wilbert for sale in this frame. Wilbert was supposed c '08-1921.

I spoke with the owner,he said he hadn't scrutinized it but would and get back.I also think most knives this age would be marked on all blades. Have a look.

Seller usually has some good knives but I don't like this one. Doesn't look period correct for the Wilbert time frame. Master looks a bit more reworked than the rest of the knife. Center pin is off color too. I've seen a number of Wilbert hawkbills but nothing like this. Very unusual pattern. Lyle, have you ever seen this pattern before? You'd be the one I'd ask about it.

I agree with the others, I'm not saying it was maliciously done, but I wouldn't buy it. Doesn't look right to me.

The frame and handles look like a Schrade Walden 804 whittler.
The main blade looks like it came out of a farmer jack.

I saw this one also, a few days ago. Agree it looks suspicious, not old enough to be an honest old Wilbert. Otherwise I really like the knife, and if it's been worked on, have to say it looks from the pictures to be nicely done.

I would stay away from that one.Looks like at least the master blade has been replaced.

There are several things about this knife that make it appeared to me that it has been worked on.
1- The off-color pivot pin for the master blade, especially apparent on the pile side.
2- I believe the grooves in the bolsters have recently been filed deeper. The groove in the rear mark side bolster is flattened out somewhat from wear, but the other bolsters do not appear to be worn down. It's very unusual to see only one bolster worn and not all for being. Therefore, I think someone filed the bolsters deeper and missed the rear mark side bolster, or just didn't take it down as far.
3- The mark side rocker pen is rounded off, as if rounded over by sanding with sandpaper. Also the handle rivets on the mark side show evidence of the same sort of sanding or heavy polishing.
4- Although it is difficult to see from the side view in the next to the last picture with the master blade open fully, it does appear that the spine of the blade may stick up above the back spring. If we had a good picture of the backsprings with the master blade open that would give us a better idea of the fit of the blade to the springs.

I'm inclined to agree with Grant, it looks like an Schrade 804 frame.
The secondary blades, the small clip blade and the coping blade are the right blades in the right position to be a Schrade Walden 804. I think it is a Schrade Walden 804 with a Wilbert master blade added.

Oh, I definitely thought it was an 804 frame,hence the asking when Schrade made that pattern. I've only seen this pattern in Sheffield knives. I've never seen a knife in the '04-1921 (Wilbert stamped knive by Goins) time frame not stamped on all blades. That don't mean it never happened.

The seller I believe is forthright and we have talked before. He was going to look at it again and get back to me.I explained my reservations to him.

These are the only pruner whittlers I have ever heard of (again there may more out there?, but I expect they are rarer than hen's teeth).

If you can believe it ,I had never heard of these,and got all three within a COUPLE MONTHS. Two were gifted to me by Mike Losicco and John Lloyd.

I had to buy the one. I grin.

Clements pruner whittlers( I first called them farmer whittlers). Clements was a high end London retail store. It was said to leave England with a nicety,go to Clements. Goins has them listed only to 1875,but they obviously lasted somewhat longer.

The first two are still etched Firths Stainless (pearl) and the first stag Stainless Throughout.I think they were made by Sheffield cutlers Willis and son Earnest,or maybe by Willis at Thomas Turner.

c early 20s?. Willis Mills worked for TT,then him and his son started their own shop. He said they made many knives for Clements. Firth made Stainless c 1914 I think.

I believe this seller is an honest and forthright person,he has helped me before. Not too much knowledge out there on farmers jacks,rooster combs ,or "pruner whittlers".

I was asking when Schrade started making the 804 frame,earliest I can find is 1938.

The polish job looks like a 1959Brett special if you know what I mean, and that would explain the blade replacement too.
