I would like to bid on it but would like to know if the knife looks OK?

Mike,
Here is a direct link to the auction.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %26fvi%3D1
I have concern over the handles looking so good, the bolsters looking so good and the blade looking well used. They just don't match, I would perfer that all parts have equal wear.
Has it been polished, and the handles replaced???? Looks it to me
JMO
But then again, as Mike will tell you, I am CRAZY

That's what I was thinking...
PA Knives,
Before I read your comment, I looked at the knife, and I was thinking
exactly as you said. Doesn't seem to match up very well. You can see the reflection of the camera in the highly-polished bolster... But, I make NO claim to be an expert!

It seems to me that since the bolster is nickel silver and the blade is carbon steel one would expect to see a distinct difference in their color. The fact that the blade is so dull in comparison to the bolster is actually reassuring to me. It makes me think that the knife has not been buffed. If someone hit the bolster with just a little bit of Simichrome it would probably shine up just like what you see. As a matter of fact, the bolsters look a little dinged to me (maybe my eyes deceive) and that gives me a little bit of a warm fuzzy feeling also.
I can't figure out where the seller is getting that pattern number. You can see both sides of the tang and I certainly don't see it. On top of that, it doesn't seem to bear that much resemblance to an 11 pattern, it doesn't seem to have any swell in the center. I'd like to know where he's getting his pattern information.

I've had a chance to research this knife a little. There was an older 11 pattern which did not have the swell in the center and which had the long bolster like this one. The picture I have (in Bruce Voyles' book) even shows the same bowtie shield.
I still can't find one listed with wooden handles though.
By the way, I asked the seller about the pattern number. It is not stamped, but like I said it is certainly a dead ringer for the one shown in Voyles (except for the wooden hondles).

Hmmm, that's odd because the old Case bros. catalogues showed each knife in it's actual size so you could lay the knife down inside the outline for comparison. The catalogue shows the 5111 with and without guard for 18 dollars per dozen. It also shows a bone example without guard for 14 dollars per dozen. All these are listed as 5111 or 6111, look like a cheetah, and are 3 1/2 in. It does not show one with wood handles. I wonder if maybe two sizes were made? I've been looking a long time and don't remember seeing a pattern number stamped on a Case bros knife.jonet143 wrote:page 45, sargents 6th. case brothers little valley 6111 1/2L - 4 7/16"Blade Runner wrote:Johnnie if you check the old Case Bros. catalogue reprints you'll see that the Case Bros. 11 pattern was 3 1/2 inches. Blade Runner,
In my book (Voyle's) it also shows this older style of 11 pattern as 4 3/8". It is identical in profile (elongated bolster, straight sides, bowtie shield) to the one in the auction with the exception of the wooden handles.
It would seem that there is a misprint somewhere.
By the way, as stated above, I asked the seller and he confirmed that there is no pattern number stamped on this knife. Of course, that's also pretty obvious from his pictures. He is speculating on the pattern number, that's why he brings up the 2111 possibility, due to his indecision on the handle material.
Personally, I think the pattern number is correct, at least the 11 part of it.
