Hey all,I hope the seller is not a Member here but...the truth is the truth.
Bought a Hunters Pride Catt from the Bay and I usually don't have that kind of Money to spend(100.00)
so it sucks even more when it doesn't turn out right.
The Knife looked good in the pictures...I guess too good...
Right away when I opened it up the Tang side Handle looked weird..because it was some type of fake, synthetic Bone "looking"
It was then I noticed it was too thick and also the Pins had been messed with.
Even if I would get a partial refund I just don't feel the same about this Knife now,so I am returning it.
3rd pic is the real bone side.

well I could try tomorrow outside, the natural light may help.
Very hard to see what I mean unless You have it in Hand,it's way too shiney and seems too smooth even for
worn Bone.
The pics on Ebay looked like Bone to Me and that's why I bought it.
Either way that Scale was replaced ,pins too probably and I had no knowledge of that.
thank

In the groove just below the shield it looks like there is evidence of Haversian canals. What looks really strange is that the jigging has grooves running at 90 degrees(across the groove rather than parallel to it).Never seen jigging done like that before.
I'm glad You mentioned that, I didn't see that until I posted these Pics, now it jumps out at Me.
It's odd for sure.

Well, I agree that the two sides do not look identical. From the photos I could not say if one was bone and the other synthetic. I have a couple of knives where the bone handles are quite different from side to side.
You mention that the shield side handle is too thick. I note that the reverse side has a double or triple liner. Could the thicker handle be designed to offset the thicker liner and keep the blade centered? Are the bolsters identical or is one thicker. More photos please!
Hmmm, interesting thought about the Liner.
The Handle looks the most suspect near the Bolster.
Another thing is..I don't think I've ever seen imitation Bone Handle material.
Here's a pic from an ongoing ebay auction of the same type Knife

Well could be...but it's the strangest looking Bone I've ever seen.
Not that it matters but it's not orig to the Knife anyway.

The last picture is quite telling. Not sure what that mark side handle is but it certainly doesn't look right or original to the knife. As others have said here and elsewhere on AAPK it is sometimes very hard to assess without the knife in hand but I think cattaraugus57 hit the nail on the head in his evaluation. I'd return it for sure.

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
Thank You Wayne, that Pic shows a lot about what I was trying to convey.
It can be tough for others to understand if the Photos don't capture it correctly.
Peanut I was thinking that very thing this morning...I've seen some really hacked together Cattaraugus Knives
that do not make sense.

Now that I have taken another look at the other example I see that it is a liner lock knife. Is the questionable knife a liner lock as well? It is hard to tell from the pictures but that could account for the extra liner and also the thickness of the mark side scale.Just postulating.
Thanks, Yes it is a Liner Lock, that was actually mentioned as a reason for the extra thickness.
The Bone looks very light and odd especially near the Bolster.
It's just a shame someone went that far(too far as for Polishing) with it and then "finished" the Pins
in such a crude manner,I guess that bothers me more.

You're right Bob.....it wasn't a bad buy.
If I could finish off those Pins better that would help.

Catts are not my area, so I cannot speak to the construction of the knife.
What I see looks like well worn genuine bone handles.
I have never seen any man-made material that looks that much like bone. If such a nice synthetic replacement existed, we would have seen it on production knives long ago, rather than the unattractive stuff that was used, like Staglon, Delrin, etc.
Durable, but not pretty.
As a medico, I will put forth the idea that all bone is not equal. Some is more dense than others and the portion of the cattle's leg bone from which one piece is taken is not the same as a piece taken from another area.
The calcium content of a cattle's diet would determine the density of its bones. The amount of work its legs were required to exert just to move it around its pasture or environment would also determine, to some extent, the density of its bone structure.
The one thing synthetic handle material always lack is Haversian canals, blood vessels, and if that handle slab on the OP knife has them, it's bone.
Get a 20 or 30 power loop and look at the handle.
If it's uniform in texture, color, and contains no remnants of blood vessels, then it's not bone.
I think it is.

I've already given my opinion but I'd like to chime in, in support of Charlie's post. For under two bucks on eBay, it removes all doubt. Everyone who collects knives, guns, etc should have one of these or something similar.
Thanks Charlie,...makes sense to Me ,I have never seen any Handle material that even comes close to
real Bone.
Jerry,thanks...I have a loop but that one is better than mine,.....now if I could only get some
new Eyes on there!
Like I said..it's to bad the Pins aren't finished better...they're really rough.
have to send it back soon or just keep it....tough call.

I'm not sure how the knife was represented in the sale but whatever the handle material is it's not original to the knife. If it were my knife and I had the option I would return it. I don't believe the knife is one of the left over Catt parts knives that were saturating the market some years ago. Most of these knives looked new and not worn.
Notice how on the mark side of the eBay auction knife and the pile side of cattaraugus57's OP knife the color is darker in the narrow recesses of the jigging and lighter in the wide recesses of the worm grooves? This makes sense because the dye would be more likely to ware and lighten on the smooth flat surfaces of the bone as well as in the wider recesses of the jigging. On the mark side of the OP knife just the opposite is true. The recesses of the small jigged areas are lighter than the wide worm grooves. This doesn't make sense to me.
From the pictures I would guess the mark side handle is some sort of composite material and at very best cobbled bone. I have done a fair amount of dyeing and jigging of handle materials and it definitely appears to have been jigged with a hand held rotary tool.

Thanks Wayne...good explanation. I probably will send it back.
I appreciate all the opinions really....but If anyone here saw this Knife in person You would see right away what I'm talking about...that Mark Side just does NOT look real....but I understand what is being said about it being real Bone and how there is no fake Bone material to be had....or is there?
The back side Bone is really nice but the Pins just suck!
