hi there greetings from australia. i've just become a member but have been a keen collector for many years. only recently found this site as an attachment on an ebay listing and have already found it very useful regarding history and research. if anyone out there has any knowledge about T Williams Smithfield London Made knifes{pipe brand} i would love to hear from them. i have 1 but cannot find out anything. i do know that their sharpening steels sell for $500+ in oz. best regards to all

im overwhelmed by the welcome guys! thats my living room table it's spotted gum commonly used for hulls of commercial fishing boats its 2 inches thick and bloody heavy. that old knife i found in a second hand shop with packing case handles and nails for pins i beleive it was made prior to 1840.

this is actually london made pre sheffield. they kicked most of the cutlers out of london about 1840 because of pollution problems i believe they had a lot. also i noticed that there is abig forum on wood handles running we have some wonderful hardwoods here would anyone like me to rustle up e few to see.coastal banksia, causurina ,mangrove, maple, antactic beech, scribbly gum, spotted gum to name a few?

Spotted gum, very nice..................the knife is cool too...............LOL

It almost has the grain and color of mahogany except for the green tones!

Hi Chico, other than some of your posts on various sites, I can't find anything specific on that knife. In general, Smithfield, on the edge of London, was a market distict and also a famous centre for butchering meat that supplied the inner city markets. Here is a link to a little information. thanks for that info. i suppose where there is butchers there are knives and steels, but the one i have is more like a fighting knife in its weight and heft, balance is perfect. thanks to all for the warm welcome.

Hey guys, I am a new member also from Australia and came across this thread when I was trying to find some information on a T Williams Smithfield cleaver that I have just inherited after cleaning out my grandfathers shed. I belive that it may have belonged to his father putting it pre-1900s.

I has 2 stamps on it. One is 112576 near the handle, the other is a number one at the top of it (see pics if they have uploaded properly).

Any information regarding it's history would be greatly appreciated.
