WARNING Wood Seller for Custom Knives on Ebay

I bought 3 pieces of Amboyna Burl for custom knives and customizing factory knives from this seller on ebay. I also did not pay those ridiculous shipping charges.

I got 3 pieces of Amboyna Burl at decent prices from exoticwoodscompany on ebay. The pieces of burl arrived and yesterday, about a week after I received them I sanded off the sealer. It must have a Red Tint in it! The wood I have is as wet as can be! I can feel the moisture just by holding it and who knows what it will look like when it dries or what shape I will have for that matter.

Granted the wood is for turnery which should be moist, but even this is really to wet for turning. So wet in fact that anyone turning a bowl should worry about how it will dry out.

I think I may use some red wood dye at 30 - 40% of normal mix and pull a vacuum on the jar so I can get a decent loking color (MAYBE). Under that Urethane it was yellow, NOT RED!

Kind of a funny outfit, they had a funny credit card service that wanted more information than I was willing to give so I used something else to pay them. Based in the Phillipines and shipped out of Stratford, Connecticut they WILL NOT GET ANY MORE BUSINESS FROM ME!

BE WARNED, I WOULD HAVE SENT IT BACK IF I HAD NOT CUT IT UP BEFORE SANDING ON A BELT SANDER! After I saw the sanded wood, I went back to the table saw and I could get the sawdust to clump in my hand, so - WET!

Unless you have the facilities for drying - stay away, way to wet, must have been harvested not very long ago.

I used to work with him some years ago. I bought some burl on ebay & saw that it was local & asked if I could pick it up. It was them I found out who he was. Nice guy, great burl and pretty reasonable prices.
I like to go to his shop & pick what I want him to cut for me. Great fun.

No, I've not purchased from them before, I usually purchase lumber or a burl that I cut up to make several knife handles. I do have a lot of stabilized woods on hand and I may offer some of them for sale soon. I have some Buckeye, AAAAA Curly Coa, and other exotic woods. I think the only guy I've purchased scales from is the Hardwood Gallery, http://www.galleryhardwoods.com/knifehandle.htm who are a bit expensive but it is stabilized and I just love the end grain Black Palm, one unfinished one I have a picture of below.

None of the knives in the picture are finished at the time this picture was taken. Thanks for the link Eric, Im sure I will use it! I just added it to my favorites, see a couple that need to be in my shop.

I beleive I have Dale, if not I have browsed his store, I do know that. I just put him in my ebay favorites (so I don't forget ). I usually cut my own from burls or lumber I have purchased. Do you remember the Hardwood Gallery guy from the Oregon show? You bought some stabilized wood from him and I found some Stabilized Masur Birch for some Puukko knives I made.

I put these guys out as a warning because they should not be selling wood that wet, my first and last transactions. Even though they advertise their wood for turning it was far to wet for turning. If I made a bowl, I would worry about it when it dried. Dale, if you are about to make a trip out there let me know, I am looking for some high quality Amboyna Burl that is very red. The last I got was from Cooks Wood when I took a walk around their warehouse and it was excellent quality but pricey.

Great looking knives Hukk. My 5 year old grandaughter did have a complaint because you didn't add enough pictures of them. She loves to learn about knives. She knows more about knives at age five then I knew at 45.

He didn't have a ton of wood with him, but I wouldn't have expected him to have too much at that show, as it was much smaller than the OKCA show. Nice guy though. I always look for him at the shows now. I am about to use that Buckeye I got from him in April. I will show the knife when finished.

I hope to get over and see Jerry, (theburly1), before the end of the month. I need some more wood before I start the Christmas knives for my family members. Did you see the Lion's Blood Amboyna burl he has on ebay now? Is that red enough? I will check with him and see what else he has.
Going to his shop is like going to a candy store. When ever I go anywhere they sell exotic woods, I usually buy way more than I will use on a reasonable period of time. It is like buying too much candy at the candy store.

I looked through his ebay listings and the Amboyna Burl I thought was a little pricey at $35.00. The domestic woods were really fairly priced though. But for domestic woods I generally buy a board and cut it up, sell a few blocks and have the rest for free. I have a table saw and a good wood cutting bandsaw that will make short work of the hardest woods you can find. The last good Amboyna Burl I bought was about $80 but it was big enough for 6 fixed blade knives, I still have some that has been cut up and stabilized. I did buy it in Oregon when I made a tour through the warehouse of Cooks Wood there in Klamath Falls. Yeah that ended up being a pricey trip but I got some really great wood.

I have some Buckeye that I paid $125 and I ended up with 24 blocks that is currently at K&G for stabilizing. I will put some on eBay and some should fetch a great price, more than I'm willing to pay, but there is a lot of very pleasent gray's, swirls, and just chock full of eyes. Sell half of it and I'm about even or a little ahead +/- a few $.

I'm completely stocked up with some great AAAAA Curly Koa, Western Black Walnut, Buckeye, Blue Mahoe, snakewood, Leopardwood, Wenge, some really great stabilized Cedar Burl from Oregon, Thuya Burl, Zebra Wood, Curly Maple and Curly Hickory and a lot of these are stabilized. I also have Ziricote, Bocote (man, some of the tightest grain I've seen on this wood), Tulipwood and Maple Burls and lumber including some Tiger Curl that will go on Tomahawks (4 on order).

I have plenty of wood, but I am looking for some great looking Amboyna Burl just like Lion's Blood Amboyna burl Jerry has, but, I know I can get a better price. Certainly this means buying some myself and cutting it up.

Some of his exotic woods like Thuya Burl and Snakewood are only 1/4 inch, I guess I could request some cut at 3/8.

I have found that you can stabilize Thuya Burl and not have it weep on you. I have baked it at 175 to 200 degrees until it stops weeping usually it takes 20 hours and I wipe off the resin/sap every hour. I have done this before and after stabilization. Some woods just need to be stabilized to be used.

I was looking for some Amboyna Burl to cut up at good prices when I bought from exoticwoodscompany on ebay, never expected to get wet wood though, we're talking just off the tree type wet.

I liked Jerry's wood, but I have found similar wood for a lower price. Just means I buy a big piece and cut it up.

I may do that, see what kind of deal he can do. The color of his Amboyna Burl is about like what I have, on hidden tang knives they have been fantastic looking, usually I cut it a little long so I can use the cut-off as a spacer on some stag handled knives, along with some thinner metal and dyed woods, make a nice spacer stack under the stag. I'll locate what I have and Amboyna Burl just bought and take some pictures. After 3 sessions in the oven at 2 hours each they are mighty wet.

Usually has a great variety, always the same size though I did sopt a cople of nice pieces that caught my eye on other sites I frequent. Found some pretty nice blackwood too. Some very over-priced maple scales at $29.00 each.
