Wooden Souvenir Knives

Wonder if anyone has information or collects this type of wooden souvenir knife? Both are kind of interesting historically.

At the top - This wood was cut from the top / Of an Indian Mound Near / Fairmount, GA / Gordon County. You can also see something embedded in the handle area and it says Flint from / The mound - around it. Has an Indian arrow and so far as I can see is not dated. Maybe the type of souvenir sold by native American's in the 1940's? I did some looking on Google for this and there are Indian Mounds in the area but they are closer to other cities than Fairmount. Maybe this was a minor mound that is not a tourist attraction any longer?

The other says - U.S. National Cemetery / Andersonville, GA / 13,900 Federal Prisoners / Buried here. It is dated 1938 on the back of the blade. An obvious reference to the Union Civil War troops buried there but I wonder if this was the type of thing sold by disabled veterans of that era?

I have a couple of letter openers that are carved from wood that commemorate various places. One of them has a Stanhope viewer embedded in the handle that shows a picture of the site.

I think these were principally meant to be letter openers.

I had one for many years, carved from what looked like dogwood to me. I'm pretty sure it was from "Rock City" in Chattanooga. If so, I bought it when I was in 5th grade, about 1958 or 59.

I like both of those in the OP.

Hey Charlie , I wish that I had the talent to make something like that . A friend of mine (also a "toe" collector) supplied an example to go by and a then 75 year old gentleman named Robert Sizemore crafted them (all wood except for the brass pins and a M.O.P. shield) . I originally had 3 of them and I foolishly let 2 of them go (couldn't turn down the 300% profit at the time) . You should see the "to scale" Harley that he created from wood down to the last detail !

A Google search doesn't bring up anything with that spelling (Gatawba with a 'G'). It does however bring up a Catawba Valley Knife Club (Catawba with a 'C') that was located in Morgantown, NC and still active in 2008. Nothing else.

Anybody seen a Catawba worm lately? I haven't seen them in years and all the Catawba trees they used to strip bare around here stay fully leafed through the Summer.

But, Catalpa is scientifically correct.

I guess "Catawba" is Southern.

A horseweed is a tall woody stemmed plant that grows to a height of six feet or so. Inside the stem is where you'll find the horseweed worm. It's a whitish colored grub usually about half an inch to three quarters inch in length. If I can locate some horseweeds I'll take a picture for you.

We used to break those off, leaving a long handle beneath and used them for "head knockers"

We didn't have very many equine species around here when I was growing up.

Sounds like what we used to call "chigger weed" . It seemed that whenever we got chigger bites , it could be traced back to wandering through a patch of these weeds (usually looking for "headknockers" .
