The mountainside bush here in south central B.C. is thick with trees and undergrowth. Very healthy, never logged and no roads, just elk trails to follow as you pick your way through.

And no black bears??
I'm afraid of black bears. Got too close to one once while fishing in Montana. Walked up on it in tall grass.
It ran away from me. I'm afraid of black bears anyway.
Yes, there are black bears and grizzlies at higher elevation that come to valley bottom on occasion. I used to be afraid of bears, but after 35 years of living truly on the edge of wilderness i have come to understand bears and their peaceful nature. I am quite willing to share 'my' place with them, including apples, plums, pears, etc. in the orchard. They sense my acceptance and i have never been threatened.
Bears here have not seen or interacted with many people. They have not been shouted at, shot at, etc. so they have no reason to dislike people. Bears around dumps, state parks, etc. that have a history of being disrespected by people are ones i would not feel comfortable around.
