WelderBob,I think what you are referring to on the tang is this stand or prop.I found this in a barn when I moved here and it laid in my garage rusted up for a year or so until I stumbled onto it and cleaned it up.

O.K. .....so this is a knife, but it's about the stag. And it's going to be a different knife !

I bought a Wostenholm carver for $5, and thought I'd use the stag on a folder, but it's just too nice to lose any of it, so I think I'll have a fixed blade made to fit the handle.

This piece is just under 4-1/2'', so I'm thinking maybe another little drop point, and I have a maker in mind whose sheaths are as nice as his blades.

All ideas and opinions given consideration.

This kinda' reminds me of a cold morning I skipped work, for breakfast at a Cracker Barrel. I went to a gun shop after, bought a $300 sporterized 6.5x55mm because I liked the stock, then needed a hard case, scope, rings, and ammo. Lost day and breakfast included, I still have that $1200 gun.

Fran, sounds like your day off fits into the
"seemed like the thing to do at the time" category

Here is a recent find, it's a 1996 red Stag Case 18 stockman
that is one of the few models with the regular clip blade.
Other regular clip blade 18s are the PW old red, navy blue,
natural, an SFO by SHC, and a burnt white with Zippo thru RJR.

Great looking Stag folks...if you dont like stag on knives...well...outstanding folding hunter Eric...these are some of my favorites...xx's and usa's...notice the difference in color and texture between the two era's...

Here's an old Case fixed blade, that's dated to exactly 1957, 'cause that's when Uncle Bud received it as a Christmas present.

He gave it to me, in '92, still in the original sheath.

This is from Great Eastern's UN-X-LD Stag Collection--is the cherry picked Sambar Stag from Great Eastern

They are matching serial numbers.

Personally I preferred 9 out of 10 of my general run stag to the "cherry picked" set... Haven't really figured that out yet...

Here's a custom, made by a buddy of mine. His name is Estes, from Calico Rock, AR. Haven't heard from him in about 20 years, so I think he's dead, now. He trained under Jim Crowell, years ago.

To be honest, I've forgotten what kinda steel this is. It's flat-ground, hand-rubbed to 2000 grit. It's rather thin, which is what I wanted, and we measured my hand, worked on the overall shape together, - it was made to my spec's exactly - which is what I call a custom, vs. handmade.
