Verdigris

A friend gave me a Schrade LB7. It has been stored in the leather sheath for a long time. The knife is covered in verdigris, I know how to clean it. My question is, how do I get the verdigris out of the inside of the sheath? The sheath is in good shape otherwise and I would like to reuse it.

Googled that question, one site suggests vinegar and soda to remove verdigris from the pores of the leather, sounds like a good start .

You can use an old tooth brush to give the inside of that sheath a good scrubbing. You'll likely need to apply some sort of leather treatment after it's dried.

Thank you too Phil. I also read Hoppes No. 9 takes care of this problem. And Hoppes No.9 smells better than roses.

Schrade used a lot of leather that was not vegetable tanned leather over the years.
Once you get the leather cleaned and the knife cleaned and you store the knife in the sheath, the verdigris will return.
To prevent that I will put the knife in a zip lock bag of some sort to keep the knife from touching the leather.
The bag does not need to be sealed, just around the knife between the brass or nickel silver and the leather.

The vinegar should do the trick with the leather. Phil's idea with the tooth brush is a good one!
As for a leather preservative, I use Leather Therapy (Google it for the website). It is good stuff made for high end horse tack, and always works well for me.

Looks like a diluted vinegar or lemon solution should help dissolve this compound(verdigris)
