real old knives unknown

Post by tomehawk2010 »

I Love this forum. I wished I had found this years ago.

I need an experts eye. I have two pocket knives that have been in the family forever. I would like to know more about them.

First is a two blade marked Clark Bros. Germany. My dad received it as a boy and it had been passed down, but not sure how many generations. Great grandfather passed in 1938 and his dad was murdered in Grandview, TX in 1883. Has bone on both sides that is yellowish.

The next one I think is really old and it was passed down as well. One side is bone yellowish and brown, the other side grandpa put wood piece a really long time ago. He was born in 1904 and I think he had is as a youth from his father. It is well made, and one blade has an inscription; top line is hard to read, starts maybe OR or CR and is 7 or 8 letter long, the bottom line says Cut CO. Three blade Jack knife, I think dad said grandpa had to replace one blade back in the 50s.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

tomehawk, I'm sorry that I can't help with your inquirey, but I just wanted to say that I think it's awsome to have such rich historical pieces that have been passed down through the ages. I hope someone comes along and sheds light on your search, Tim

Welcome here.

Clark Bros. Germany. 1895-1929.
Might your stamp look something like this one?

Your second knife is intriguing. I can't remember ever seeing that particular shield before. I would think the key in identifying the knife might be in the shield. Maybe someone here has seen this shield before.

Is the knife marked on more than just the master blade?

Can you tell how many lines there are in the stamp? 1,2,3 or 4?

Is the stamp lettering in a straight line or is it arched?

Can you try to take and post a picture of the stamp?

If the blade that was replaced is the only blade that is marked that would present a problem.

Is the knife marked on more than just the master blade? Master blade has no mark, it is actually the smallest blade

Can you tell how many lines there are in the stamp? 1,2,3 or 4? There are two lines

Is the stamp lettering in a straight line or is it arched? it is straight, not curved like Joe's picture of the Shrade

Can you try to take and post a picture of the stamp? I'll try

If the blade that was replaced is the only blade that is marked that would present a problem. that is possible, and all three blades have unique characteristics. The double blade end is the only end that looks like it may have been apart, the whole knife is tight and very useable.

This blade has a thumb pull cut all the way across the top of the blade. The main blade does not go all the way, and has a bevel where it stops.

this is the end where it looks like the pin had come apart at one time or another.

The wood side my grandfather repaired, maybe in the 1930s, maybe after his father died in 38. I wish one of them were around so I could ask them.

The shield is a different color yellow that the brass on the knife. Maybe 9 K gold???
The "R" on the shield is zig zag lines, of course the R is for my last name. I am the eldest living
Robbins grandchild, but one of the youngest of all the cousins.

The one blade on the single end has lines in the base of it looks like tool marks from being made.
If this had been handed down from my GG grandfather 1856-1883, then it would be pretty old.
He came down to Texas from Benton Co. Ark and was killed in a sharecrop land dispute.

Really hard to tell form the stamp since it is quite worn. Best guess WORCESTER CUT CO. ?????

The shield is nickle silver. It tends to get a little yellow with age. If you polish it a bit it should look more silver in color.

Great that you have these knives from your family.

Welcome to AAPK, the friendliest knife site on the internet. ::tu::

I doubt the shield is gold, that would be unusual on a knife of that pattern.

The "R" was added with a vibrating scribing tool, such as one with which people ID their tools and other items. Anyone in your lineage have an "R" as a first or last initial?

From a quick, first impression glance at your photos, I'm getting the impression it possibly reads,
PACIFIC / CUT CO., but that's actually a company from the 1980's that made and sold Bali-Song knives, so obviously that cannot be correct.

I'll do a few more glances. ::facepalm::
