Daddy Barlow

Post by Miller Bro's »

Anyone recognize the maker of this one?

The front tang is totally unmarked, the reverse has the remains of a pattern number.

The grooved bolsters are a clue as to the maker and if the pattern number was readable it would be pretty easy.

I hope so; That could mean we'll get an answer.

Here's a pic of the Robeson redrider mentioned. Not exactly the same. Bolster and pins are a little different.

I'm with Randy. Altho sharpening may have distorted the blade it still has that Remington swag to it.

I only have 2 Remington 1240s, but they both have brass pins, the knife in question looks like steel or NS.

Camillus didn't have a second groove on the bolster.
Can we get a close up of what there is of the pattern number?

Well, I've got Schrade Cut. Co, Ulster, Keen Kutter, and HSB OVB, and none of them have the thread at the tip of the bolster.

My camera is not good enough to capture a clear shot of the number, but using a
magnifying glass I can definitely make out 0 as the last digit and what I am very sure looks like 4 in front of it.

By the placement it probably had a 3 or 4 digit number stamped on the pile side. The mark side shows no sign of ever being stamped it is full thickness so the tang was not ground off as in a factory second. In fact the construction and fit/finish is top notch for a knife of this pattern. Someone did sharpen the blade and there is a slight belly and scratches but it is full length and has strong snap.

The liners, bolsters, and the end and spring pins are all steel. There are two small brass pins holding the handles on.

Initially I was thinking Cattaraugus but couldn't find one in the reference books I have. But I left my go-to book in Cumberland the last time I was there, but will be back again on Friday. Wouldn't a Remington have "Remington" stamped on the bolsters? ::shrug::

Remington's R1240 is a large Barlow with double ringed bolsters. The only difference is Remington is stamped in the bolster.

Well, the two threaded bolster is certainly a tempting way to call this a Remington, and the nail nick is in the right place, (although they can vary) and the blade does have a Remmy kinda look. Also the remaining stamp could be what's left of a R1240. The OP said the 0 is clear with a possible 4 next to it. Look how deep the 0 is stamped on this example below.
But how would you account for unstamped bolsters... a lunch box edition? Were the bolsters stamped in two steps, threads in one, logo in another? Doesn't seem likely but I don't really know. Also I don't know if Remington used steel pins in any of these. Anybody have one with steel? A Remington should also have a half-stop. Does look like a rem at this point.

Did Remington make contract knives for anyone? My go-to reference book didn't come through for me. That saw cut bone reeks of Remington, the dye too.

Wonder if it is a Remington/PAL transition knife. That would explain the lack of a stamp on the bolsters although most pattern numbers of transition knives were etched rather than stamped. Could have been an early transition where they were using leftover blades.

I'm sticking with my original guess of Remington but here is another thought.... check out this Master Barlow next to a Remmy.

Interesting, but the Colonial only has 3 pins in the scales.
The PAL thought is also interesting. Anybody ever seen a PAL Barlow of any size or configuration?

I checked some other reference books, Pal didn't make a Barlow from what I'm finding. ::shrug::

Tain't Robeson. They did not have grooved bolters.

The knives that Camillus made for Cutler Federal and marked "ROBESON" AFTER Robeson closed up shop in 1965 did have a single grooved bolster.

If It's Remington and it sounds as though it is, could it not have been an unmarked premium for somebody, like a sports magazine, etc. and had a now nonexistent blade etch?
