Here is a Springfield J. Stevens .22 that I believe was manufactured in the 1930's or 1940's. From the research I have done, it appears to have been a low-cost everyman's rifle - which makes sense given it was Depression era purchase by my sharecropper ancestors. I am sure it had a meaningful purpose and wasn't a recreational hobby item at that time. It was handed down to me in the 1960's from a family member. Many old beer cans picked up from the side of the road were sunk in Dutchman Creek back in the day from rounds out of this rifle. It is a bolt action with a 5 shot clip. It has not been fired for over 40 years. I intend to rectify that soon .

I have a (First Year Production) 1958 Savage 110, 270 cal. , that was made in the Chicopee Falls Ma. plant --- Savage moved their operations, around the corner to Westfield Ma. in 1960**

I also have an old Savage 110 from the same Chicopee Falls Ma. plant. It has an old 5 digit serial number not pre-pended with a letter like the newer ones. Best I can tell based on receiver length, it is a first year run "short bolt action" from 1959'.

Originally a .308 that my Dad had converted to .243 for me at about ~11 years old for my first deer hunt, which came maybe a year or 2 later.

My most prized long rifle my Dad gave me. The stock is not stock production. My Dad either got a very rough cut stock or prepped the wood for the stock himself. He was a stellar woodworker but not by trade. Either way, I was about 11 or 12 years old, and he and I were in the garage for days on end with a coarse rasp, wood files, numerous sandpaper grits and about 30 coats of stain, lacquer, poly or whatever. Found out shortly after we finished it that I and a left eye dominant, left hand on rifle only shooter so the butt cheek is now on the wrong side but no big deal.

Shot my first measly spike (barely legal) buck with this rifle when I was 13 years old in Oil City, PA.

My brother in law shot himself in the hand with a 30-06 many year ago in Utah. yes, in the hand! Foolish/careless mistake but no less tragic. Mom was soured on guns. Dad sold it to his best friend down the street mainly cause Mom was a bit freaked out. Pretty heartbroken at that point. Years later, the nice guy down the street passed away after my Mom also did. We approached his widow and she tells us to come over. I s**t you not, she opens the door to a bedroom with about 200 rifles stacked like firewood against the wall. Some great old lever actions and such and 9 of each kind. Found my old rifle and Dad's 30-06 and away we went a few dollars shy.

This one obviously has major sentimental value of course. Had her back for about 10 years now. Will be passed down the generations to my son and grandson.

Hey Jerry --great story !!! Glad you got it back home***_______ serial number on my 110 is 8800 of 10,000 made in 1958 --- it's on the barrel and bolt --- great shooter,but don't take it out of the safe much

Thanks Phil and Monk. Was really glad to get it back. I told a similar story about my Dad's Colt Pyhton. He and I shot may rounds and spent many weekends at the range with that gun. I went over one day and it was gone. He gifted to my Brother in law. After he died I asked my brother in law after I explained the memories that gun had and he graciously returned it too me. Was lucky and blessed on both counts.

Thanks Monk for the info. Not sure my bolt has a SN. The serial number is 12*** so I feel confident I have the date correct. Just can't find anything on the internet as far as serial numbers on these old ones.

.......been shooting my new henry's(.22 & .44-40) a lot lately, and I have trouble seeing the front sights clearly on a sunny day??.....painted a white dot on the tip of the sights and this helped, but I think the main problem is the sun reflecting off the shiny barrel tops??...anyone else have this problem or am I looking for excuses for my 78 yr. old eyeballs???.......... ...........

Tommy, I don't know what your problem is but I'm not too proud to confess that if I can see the target, I can't see the sights and if I can see the sights, I can't see the target.

I think putting a nice quality scope on top of that rifle will solve the problem. I gave up shooting open sights on rifles several years ago.

Sorry Josh but I have to disagree. First off, if the barrel has an oil coating on it, which it should, tape will not stick.
Secondly, dependent on tape used if it sticks, this may not be an easy cleanup or may cause damage to the bluing on the rifle.
Easy way to emulate what he wants to do is use a thin black cloth, cut in a long thin strip and do a barrel wrap job. Does not have to be thick. Easy on and easy off, no harm and no foul. Any percieved or real glare is eliminated from the equation.

This may not even be the issue. No sense in making it harder than it has to be, just my opinion.

FYI carr...

At 50 years old, dependent on length between sights, target range, scope or not, etc. I have to use cheater glasses and sometimes I don't. My eyesight is fading abit. Not sure the glare is your issue but as Phil suggested, a scope would eliminate the issue, I believe.

I would personally not use Simple Green on a firearm. No residue with painters tape on a drywall paint job or car is not the same as a blued rifle. Might be totally fine for all I know. I realize you offered another form of cleaning to do the tape idea. Some differing opinions on the use of Simple Green here...

It will take about 5 seconds after you find that old black t-shirt to drape it over the barrel to see if this is even the issue or not is my point. Why go to the trouble and possible damage by applying tape unless this is a permenant fix?

Not even sure if this is the problem yet. Keep it as simple as possible.

..thanks for all the suggestions,fella's....I have never seen such a blueing job on a rifle to compare with the blueing on the reproduction henry .44-40..the blueing on the .22's is not near as glossy. the blueing on the reproduction .44 looks like a mirror....and it is beautiful!!!.....I found some dull black chartboard tape which peels right off with no residue.i'll try this next time!!....the real problem may be my 78 yr. old eyeballs!!!.....I fired 42 rds. last time with the .22 at about 25-30 yds. and put 'em all inside the 8 ring on a 12" sq. target, so I'm gettin' there!!!.... ............

What would be the value of an unfired, mint condition circa 1989 - 1990 Winchester 9422 lever action in .22 S, L & LR ?

Straight grip, checkered stock and fore-end.

No box, no papers.

MSRP in 2005 was $501. Out of production since about that time, I think.

The ones that are in very good shape seem to be going for about $800 (plus or minus ~$50) on Gunbroker.com

In my 2013 copy of Blue Book of Gun Values, they are listed at $675 in 100% condition. They seem to have gone up a bit since it was published a couple of years ago.

Gunbroker is a good way to get a good feel for what guns are actually selling for....you have to get a log-on account, and then you can click on "Advanced" and then click on "Completed Items". This will show you all the completed auctions. You can also sort by the number of bids, to see what generated the highest number of bids.
