Nice Older Robeson Jack Sold On Ebay

The first Robeson knives were imported by Millard Robeson from England and Germany exclusively. This continued from 1979 until 1896 when Robeson began manufacturing knives in the United States. Since inception, the company has gone through several reorganizations & eventually ended up as a Queen Cutlery brand.

Nice Older Robeson Jack Sold On Ebay

Post by RobesonsRme.com »

I'm not actively buying Robesons anymore, but I was sorely tempted to bid on this one, even though it's seen some use, the master is tipped and the blades are grey.

Long pulls on a Robeson are few and far between and having a long pull on a secondary pen is almost unheard of except on some premium pearl handled multi-blades from the 1920's.

Also, the tang stamp on this knife is rare, possibly previously undocumented.

It reads, ROBESON / CUTLERY CO. in two lines.

The definitive tang stamp reference for Robeson is in Tom Kalcevic's Knives Can Talk!.

Tom doesn't list this exact tang stamp. He does show it, but states that "ENGLAND" or "GERMANY" are on the back of the master. And I believe that on the German made knives there would be a line under the "o" in Co.

I see no such country of origin designation on this knife.

Not having the word "ShurEdge" on the knife is highly suggestive the knife was made prior to 1903.

And, those cocbola handles are just simply beautiful, aren't they?

Somebody got a nice knife.

That's a beauty. I'm a sucker for those old wood handles and that pattern is one of my favorites. Do you recall what the knife sold for ?

$79.08, Phil.

Quite possibly, this knife was made in the Sherwood/Bingham factory in Camillus, New York, prior to 1900.

That factory became Camillus Cutlery Co after Robeson left it for Perry, NY, in 1900.

The Kastor Brothers, of Germany, bought it, in order to have a domestic American manufacturing plant.

They ultimately called it Camillus Cutlery.

That knife was on my favorites list for quite a few days.
I kept counting the days. There were 40 bidders competing for it and it was rather surprising to see it ending at $79.08. It's such a handsome knife; I expected it to sell for much more. However, I did have to endure that $2.99 shipping fee that made me turn to the bottle, again. In celebration, that is.
More than a few pleasant surprises here. I'm so pleased that you, Charlie, think so highly of the knife. I was also pleased to read your remarks about it's construction and rarity. I had no idea, bidding in shear ignorance and bliss I just thought the dang thing was certainly worth owning, fully aware of it's warts.
Looking forward to it's arrival.

Joe, you got a good one there.
Let us know if you find any indication it's English.
Other than that happening, i'm going to go with Sherwood/Bingham or possibly very early Perry, NY.

I will do that, Charlie. The seller suggests Germany.

It's coming from Pennsylvania so it shouldn't be too long a wait.
Thank you for your thoughts on the knife.

A real solid knife. 3 3/8".

Joe I believe you've been bitten by the Robeson bug. :) Two very nice knives.

Let me know when you tire of that ole jack.

Thanks Phil.
I've always admired the brand, that's for sure. They just sort of popped up and I was able to get them.
I've got that jack coming and also a little pen knife.
It sure made me feel good to read Charlie's thread here about the old jack.
I'll post some more about it when it gets here.
Thanks again.

Unless the knife is actually marked, 'GERMANY" somewhere, I'd be loathe to suggest, much less state that it is.

It doesn't look like a German made knife to me.

I'd believe English.

But, I'm still leaning Sherwood/Bingham.

That old Robeson showed up today. It sure is a fine knife to handle. Strong springs, but not too strong.
Half stops x 2, brass liners with full center liner. Small steel pins with a great shield and beautiful scales. 3 9/16"
Including the desirable attributes mentioned by Charlie. No marks whatsoever indicating German or English made. I sure hope it's good ol' USA. I'm a big fan.
Thanks again, Charlie and Phil, for your comments.
