Pocket wear on handles yet no wear on blades. Questionable tang stamp. Problem seller?

It is a pretty rare name, but it is hard to trust the seller. He is a GOOD welder. The tang shows traces of a previous marking. The shield sits above the bone.The knife looks like a Hudson Valley area one; Schrade, New York, Walden - one of those. I will post it in Bernie Levine's forum. Here's the URL for your convenience.

The master blade thickness changes at the tang.My guess is the blade was refinished to get past the pits.

Mike that Keen Kutter is nice!!! I have one that is somewhat like yours. Mine has wood scales cocobolo maybe, it is not tang stamped like yours it is E.C. SIMMONS ST. LOUIS on three lines. Keen Kutter on lower bolster with just one K. Top bolster steel lower nickel silver. 3 5/8" long. Keen Kutter logo is not on the knife. I would like to know about how old the knife is. I was thinking about 1900 would be a close birthday for this knife. Pins, shield and shape same as yours. Rattail bolster.

Hi Stockman, Really nice knife you have there. I am looking at a copy of Goins' page 149 and he mentions the make that is on the bottom bolster of your knife as being from 1884-1892 but with the LaBelle mark also which was a different company. He also dates Simmons has using the Keen Kutter mark from the very beginning. That would mean that the knife could have been made between 1868-1960. I have an old copy of a Keen Kutter catalog dated 1930 and I do not see a pattern like our knives. Pattern number K2203 is the closest but does not match exactly. I think that yours is older than mine. Not sure though. Wish I had an old Walden catalog. That is were I think they were made but that is just a guess.

I have afriend that dearly wants to buy mine but am not sure I want to sell it. I usually collect New York Stae made knives but this one I really like alot. I am going to go to a small knife show on Sept 29 in Wind Gap PA near Easton so he can see it.

If you find out anything more about yours let me know.

Mike,
The logo on your knife of the diamond shape with Simmons, Keen Kutter inside was started in 1904. It's meant to represent a saw tooth cutting through wood. (You can better visualize this by looking at a larger paper image copied below). As far as stockman's tang, I'm not familiar with that one but I would imagine that it was an earlier tang stamp. Both knives were made by Walden Knife Co., so I would think that they're not too far apart age-wise. I'll have to do more checking on that. They're both excellent knives

None of the old hardware/catalog companies made their own knives. At the time these companies were huge ( the 1908 Simmons catalog was over 1500 pages, bigger than a websters dictionary

), and their products were made by hundreds of companies. E.C. Simmons (Keen Kutter) knives were made by Camillus to a smaller extent, and Walden to a large extent. They had a stake in ownership of Walden and eventually bought them out, having all their pocket knives made there. In 1923 they merged with the cutlery division of Winchester and moved all operations to Connecticut, after which Keen Kutter knives were made by Winchester on Walden equipment (confused yet?). Shapleigh (Diamond Edge, DE), another giant of the time, had their knives made by a slew of companies, here and overseas. Hibbard, Spencer , and Bartlett (OVB) had their knives made by Camillus and Schrade among others. Sears in the late 1800's-early 1900's had their knives stamped "Wilbert Cut. Co - Chicago" and made by Napanoch and Empire. Of course Winchester also bought Napanoch in 1919, so I'm not sure what happened to Wilbert after that.
In 1940 Shapleigh bought Simmons, and merged the products, still using the Keen Kutter and DE trademarks. More cutleries became involved in the manufacture of Keen Kutter knives at this point, Schrade and Ulster being a couple of them.

Brett is one of those sellers that I don;'t care what he is peddling, I don't want any part of it. Still the bidding goes on and on for his stuff.

I honesty have no pity, no sympathy anymore for losers who waste their money on ebay fakes, counterfiets, scams and balony. I just find their antics and sky high bids entertaining.
