Jerry, I should know better than to try to answer for Charlie, but I think he's referring to vinegar. Lots of folks take it for medicinal purposes and swear by it. Apple cider vinegar in particular. Chemically it's very weak hydrochloric acid. He'll be along in a while and set me straight.jerryd6818 wrote:Too esoteric for me Charlie. Thanks Ken. High School was a looooong time ago and I didn't do well in chemistry anyway. I don't recall knowing anyone who drank vinegar on purpose. However, I've known several that looked and acted like they drank vinegar............Mumbleypeg wrote:Jerry, I should know better than to try to answer for Charlie, but I think he's referring to vinegar. Actually, I was referring to stomach acid, within which most bacteria cannot survive.

Ahh. Well there ya go then. Right now I'm taking a couple of different antibiotics to kill the bacteria (the bad kind) and probiotics to add back bacteria (the good kind). I hate taking pills. Ah Jerry, that was pretty funny! Gonna take my turkey gun with me to work today, then slip down to the woods by the RR track and double check the POA vs. POI of my turkey loads. First day out hunting will be Monday morning. OH

Checked the sights on my Winchester this past Wednesday; first picture shows the patterning set-up (target at 40 yards), second picture shows the recoil (putting two ounces of Hevi-Shot through a .630 Tube on a 12 gauge shotgun will rock you). Third picture shows the 10" pattern - aim point is the gobblers waddle - about 60% of the pattern above, 40% below - ready for Monday morning. OH

The geese are all over the ponds and golf courses here.
Where I lived in Montana you couldn't get any where near them. They look out for them selves and at a warning from one a flock will take to the wing.
Here, if you walk near them they will hiss at you.
Beautiful birds these "Canada Geese".

Why is it "Canada" geese and not "Canadian" geese?
Is it because they are denied citizenship?
Inquiring and idle minds of the terminally retired wonder about such things.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
All right, I get the subtle hints. I screwed up. Again. It's Canada Geese not Canadian Geese.
Joe and Charlie, thanks for setting me straight. (seriously)
Charlie, those who go south in the winter are not called Southerners so since the "Canada Geese" go north in the summer, I guess they can't be called Canadians. (So would you call them "snow birds" or would it be "no snow birds"?)

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
I don't know. They hang around here all year, and they breed, lay and hatch.
As far as I know, they spend the majority of their time on the ground around the many ponds and lakes, even in the city center.
I have seen and heard them overhead, however, probably moving from one body of water to another.
Beautiful birds, but they make a huge mess on walkways, docks, etc.

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
Ordinarily I don't like this embarrassing true story to get past the boundaries of Connecticut but it's just so laughable and idiotic that I have to share it.
Here in Connecticut some one thought it would be a good idea to fasten to a stake a silhouette of a coyote to scare the geese. Also this classic goose frightening stunt. They put inflatable alligator heads in the ponds to scare the geese. As they say "you can't make this stuff up".

Yeah, back in the Stone Age when I was a kid, geese were the barometor for the changing of the seasons. Geese going south, Fall is falling. Geese going north, spring is about to spring. Don't know what interrupted those migrations but it just ain't right.
I've often wondered what they taste like.

Canada Goose taste more like roast beef than anything else I can compare them too. They are called Canada's, Charlie, because that is their species name and not their citizenship (singular - Canada Goose, plural Canada Geese, slang plural - Canada's). Been playing around with this old Lithgow SMLE that I inherited last year. I owned one other in the past and never shot it before I sold it - now I have found out just what a sweet shooter the Smelly is - glad I took the time to get to know this one (built in 1941). Surprisingly for it's age, and probable war experience, the rifling is very good and the chamber is not oversize - think it may give decent brass life (incipient head separation is a probable issue when loading for one of these). OH

Re: Guns & Gun Related Stuff
As I'm sure you know Colonel, the .303 Lee-Enfield has a long and storied history. Yours has traveled a long way from her origin in Australia. Those old military rifles from the latter part of the 19th Century and early 20th Century are great old weapons. I have a 7.62x54R Mosin-Nagant (and no, the R doesn't stand for "Russian" as it is colloquially known. It stands for "Rimmed".). She's a hard shooting old girl.
I find it amazing that over a hundred years later, both of those rifles are still being used in conflicts around the world.
