New to forum...need knife ID

Hi...I've been trying to find a way to identify a few knives I've recently found when cleaning out some drawers in my grandfather's house. He died a few years back and my grandmother recently went into a nursing home, giving us a chance to slowly go through all of their old stuff. I figured that this forum would be a good place to find some answers.

So...point me to the right place...should I post pics in this thread or elsewhere? I have 5 knives that have me curious...

First, I know NOTHING about knives, so forgive me if I don't know what I'm doing. For all I know, none of these knives have any value whatsoever...but you never know!

Here're the first one. Yeah, I can ID the knife as a Ka-Bar, but the box has one number on it, while the knife has a different number. And, the stamp on the knife doesn't spell Ka-bar the way it is on the box...what's up with that? Is this a cheap knife or what? It's never been used...still kept in the plastic wrapper inside the box that it came in.

Welcome to AAPK.
This is a great place to learn about knives no matter what your level of knowledge is.

It appears to me that you have a Khyber knife in a Kabar box. It could be an innocent mistake ( I had employees who worked for me in a cutlery store who would have made that exact mistake), or it could have been intentional (I am cynical about some ebay sellers).

Khyber, as you can see is made in Japan. Not a high end knife, but not all the way to the bottom of the barrel either. I don't own any, but do see them occasionally.

Kabar on the other hand is an American company, (though they do have some of their lower end knives made off shore), who make a decent product, though probably not rated "Top Drawer" by most collectors.

No doubt someone will be along soon who can tell you more about the Khyber.

Here's another knife...again, this one is easy to ID...just wondering if I've found anything that a collector might want...For all I know they could be worth $3.00 or $30.00.

And my last knife...(actually, it's not the last, as I have a US Marine Corps pocketknife that I'm pretty sure is standard fare and thus wouldn't need a pic uploaded)

actually, the khyber knife you have could have come in that kabar box. I have many original sales brochures for khyber and kabar knives, it appears to me that kyhber knives were either marketed by or sold by kabar, as an import brand probably in response to all the imports Parker was bringing in from Japan

I've tried to research on the net all day, and so far I've found nothing...

the Queen knife...I found one on Ebay that says it is a #27, but it is nothing like this knife. ???

I've looked at stores and catalogs all day and can't find this particular model or anything that looks like the knives I posted above.

I was not aware of the relationship between Khyber & Kabar.
That is one of the things I like about this hobby, I learn something new all the time.

The Queen barlow is made of a single piece of aluminum. The springs are not pinned,just held in place by the blades. A very strong,light knife.

the barlow that you have there was made by queen up through the 80's, queen made a barlow with these handles with three different blade versions of the main blade, the one you have, the clip blade and the razor. I just bought some of these at my local knife club a few weeks ago for $15 each if this helps.

Wow...$15 or $60. I like the later figure better!

Anyone have any ideas about the other knife that hasn't been identified yet...the long and skinny 2 blade knife?

yeah the book price of $60 sounds good, but like the guys at the knife club say, that book hasn't bought one knife from me.

Yeah...I know what you mean. A few years ago my neighbor tried to sell her old run down house. It was located on property in a commercial zone, but we were in a very depressed economic area. She asked WAY too much for the property, claiming that it was worth more simply because the new WalMart Supercenter that had located up the road made our values go up. My response...it's only worth what you can get out of it.

Lesson learned. BTW...she sold it for less than half of what she originally asked.

Another knife question: I've never sold a knife on eBay, and if I decide to list any of these, should I get someone to aid in the description (possibly someone from this forum?) or should I play dumb, like I am about knives, and be very non-descpritive?
