Any Suggestions On Builiding A Knife Display

Alright gang I need a little advice here. I can grow you three thousand acres of any crop you plan on eating but I don't have a whole lot of experience as a carpenter.

I am planning on building a knife display case in the fashion of something similar to what Paladin has for sale in his store. He has an old Case XX store display case. I am not locked into this style but I am using it as a goal to strive to. I like the layout of drawers and the cubby hole to store all of my knife boxes that seem to always fallout of my current chest.

Does anyone know what kind of wood I should use or can you recommend a place to checkout that might have prints of something similar that can be adapted.?

Years ago I built my reloading bench while not knowing what in the heck I was doing and it was one of the most rewarding things I have done and the bench turned out great and has given me years of service.

Anyhow here are a couple of pictures of Paladin's store display to show you what I am thinking about. I would purchase his if Texas wasn't so dang far away from my house in Florida.

Sunburst when you asked about the wood. This made me think...

I believe you like STAG a lot. So the first thing I would do is LINE up a bunch and look at the colors. Try to make the wood enhance the stag.
Do you want it dark ? Do you want it yellow like ? Do you want it with lots of GRAIN ? Do you want it Smooth ? What color will the back ground be ?

Take 3 or 4 knives with you to the lumber yard and a piece of the back ground. Lay them on a board and look at what and how you want to enhance the scales. You do not want the wood to take away from the main thing you are trying to show off.

I do not see many with a good border around the sides. When you look at a museum painting what do you see ? The painting or the frame ?

Just a thought to help with this go to a picture framing store (not Wall-mart) and talk to them and take the 4 knives and back ground with you.
