New Acquisition: Northwoods Congress.

Arrived today, very tidy Northwoods congress in red bone with Italian jigging. Everything as it should be; blades tight with no lateral movement (wobble), great snap both opening and closing, even snap all four blades, great lay-up all four blades in blade channel, good blade fall with no rubbing on blades or frame (nice), beautifully matched scales in color, jigging and fit, good back with no daylight, precise backsprings in length and cut and my old favorite, backsprings absolutely flush with the frame in open, closed and 1/2 stopped position. This is a very tidy knife, indeed; not sharpened as yet, but will be soon. Thanks Jim.

hey john, what's the closed length on that jewell? sharpen? is it dull?

Hi jonnie f,
4" closed but big and nicely chunky. Acceptably sharp with well and even cut bevels, very nicely presented edges in fact, but I'd like this one to " Shave a mouse to sleep". Love this pattern even more in the Penn. Conress with a spear blade instead of 2 sheeps foot. This one is a perfect length and weight.

John I'm glad your knife arrived and you're pleased with it. I can't seem to capture the color of those scales but you did a fine job. Sharpen that knife up and put it to work.

John...congrats on the Northwoods! Looks like a beauty and I'm sure it is in real-life (my wife has the stag two-blade congress, I have the stag gunstock).

We haven't put them to use yet, we're both still too busy just looking at them!

I was about to say that it sounds like somebody else fell under the spell of Forensic Jim and his Northwoodses, but I think our friend Jim has nothing to do with their strange, hypnotic powers.

Dang, they are nice knives.

That NW is a beaut fer shure.
Just got my first big Congress in today.
This was first existing thread that looked
even remotely compatible.

2001 Marbles Gladstone Mi USA 4" Congress.
Italian jigged bone handles, carbon steel blades
all 4 stamped. Supposedly 1 of 184.
Matches the EzO Jack I posted in Jack knives a while back.

You questioned wether this was a "compatible" thread...I think it may be VERY compatible because I think Dave Shirley of Northwoods made your MSA congress.

I may be wrong and get an earful from forensic jim, but I think I am correct.

John, You are exactly correct. Dave Shirley did make the M.S.A. Marbles. They were made in Gladstone, Mi. Dave also made Bowie brand knives out of Okemos, Mi. for a while.

Speaking of...it seems like the words "around Christmas," "Northwoods," "stag," and "Jim" have been floating around in my head lately. Any update on "the project"?

Thanks for the Marbles/NW lesson John & Jim.
I enjoy learning the history part as much as finding the knives.
Shirley must have done the 2001 MSA Italian Jig Jack knife as well,
they sure have the same character.
Wow, I've already learned something new today and it's not even 6pm yet!

Hey WOOZER, got one of them thar Northwoods yet?? I have one in my hands I'm making a leather thing for...a 2-blade folding hunter in stag....it's a big bunch of knife for sure!! Very nice....gonna have to git me some...

Nope, no NWs yet R.G.
Still doing the preliminary lO.Ok b4 I Leap part.
Seem to be highly regarded brand in AAPK, I can tell THAT much.
DLT has a NW category, but it has no PKs listed currently and the Drop Point fixed is empty also. Just 4-5 other fixed blades left.
But after getting the Marbles Congress and the Bark River Patch Knife, that may be it for my 2007 acquisitions. Think I already spent into March/April '08 as it is.

Yep, too many Kanifes, too few green $tamp$. Seems to be a Universal problem.
