Anyone have any ideas what this is? My dad picked it up on the Afghani/Paki border about thirty years ago. They were known for their gun crafting (Darra Market). Replica? Just decorative? Multi million dollar ancient find? ::tu:: Dads been gone for many years so some of the stories have been lost. And I sure as hell wouldn't step in that market as a westerner today to ask. Talk about guns!

And heck, while I'm here, what about this thing? They used these for landscaping (cutting grass, or whatever they could use for fuel). Any ideas?

Looks like it needs a good soaking to tighten the head up.

I've got about five. A Kelly/True Temper Woodslasher axe that the original owner had put a hatchet handle on, an unknown hatchet, a Kelly axe, a what looks to be an axe that was made for a kid that is built like a knife with plastic handles, and an unknown splitting maul.

And the last. I had an old double-bit axe that I had been putting off cleaning up and putting a handle in for ages. Took some sandpaper, and found it was a Kelly Axe and Tool (before Kelly got bought out by True Temper) made in Charleston, West Virginia from 1904-1930 (not sure, but that's when the Charleston factory was operating), and seems quite rare. Unlike the others, which I still use, this will be put somewhere to display.

On an abandoned adjoining property, the owner who had inherited it said that I could have anything that I found, which has mostly been tools which I frequently use. Only one of those I spent any money on was the double-bit Kelly which I bought a new handle for about $8.

I try not to but they accumulate anyway.
Here is an unmarked cruiser, my only double bit so far. It is drop forged but the steel is excellent quality, I have no problem making this one shave and is tempered very hard I think maybe it is a collins. Handle looks handmade, it was in it when I bought it for $5 at a flea market, works fine so I won't bother replacing it until it breaks. I made the sheath for it the other day, leather work is one thing I CAN do that does not involve dust or TOO many sharp pointy things I can hurt myself on.

Thanks Joe,

Here is a killer little 1 1/2 lb W. Germany boys axe with the original 24" handle I restored a while back. Still need to make a sheath for this one. It is very light and handy, quickly became one of my favorites but I still need to make a sheath for it.

WOW!
What a beautifully formed head.
I've got a small Collins that I like. I took some limbs off a tree that fell here a while back and I was able to bring it around quickly. I just weighed it. It's 2 1/2 lbs. 1 1/2lbs is small.

Scored this Craftsman Vandium double bit Thursday....was all rusty. Gave it a vinegar bath and now is covered in oil.

I also scored a Flint Edge double bit.....that's still on the handle for the time being!

Nice head, The craftsman vanadium hatchets i've had all took excellent edges.

Here is a nice little Hultafors Bruks 2 1/4 lb boys axe with a 22" handle I restored a few years ago. I try to salvage the existing handles whenever I can because they are a little pricey (compared to what I pay for most of the axes) but I always keep a spare or two on hand for each one. I like these swedish axes but won't shell out the money for a Gransfors Bruks, I'll find one at a flea market for $10 eventually haha.

Thanks. Here is a couple True Temper hatchets from the "collection". A flint edge dynamic and a True Temper Tomahawk. The Tomahawk was really beat up so it got a restore and I hung it on an 18" handle, it's a great feeling hatchet so it got a sheath and I added to my pile of keepers. The Dynamic got a framing hatchet style handle that feels a bit short for the weight of the head. I'll change that someday and make a sheath for it too. Once I run out of restored photos to post I'll show some of the clunkers from the pile in the shop that await restore this fall.

Here are a couple Plumbs I just made some clothes for. A 3 lb Hudson's Bay style I hung on a nice white hickory handle. The other is a 5 pounder I use for splitting, I hung it on a thin uncontoured handle I got out of the bargain bin at a flea market for $4. It was crusty with rust when it was given to me, found the name after a week of soaking in vinegar.

Oh, and I made some clothes for the Flint Edge Dynamic posted earlier too.
