Looks like it's oil soaked and a synthetic stone, right? My guess would be a Norton India oilstone.

Dinadan wrote:You fellows are an amazing source of lore and arcana! Sharpening stones have been with me since my earliest memories of my father sharpening his pocketknife in front of the fire. I have always had two or three around all my life. But somehow I have not spent much time thinking about them. When I broke one I just got another cheap one somewhere.

After reading through this topic I knew I needed to expand my experience, so I bought this one off Ebay. I do not know how old this one is, but since it suggests sperm oil I assume it predates the whaling ban in 1972.

Man that's a nice translucent with the box and label. A very nice score. I have a 5x2 that I absolutly love.

I agree that it looks like the Norton India oilstones I see on Ebay, but I am sure no expert.

That Buck Hard Arkansas looks like a good one too!

Good selection you have there, Stayinsharp.

I have kind of wanted one of these Boker Whittlers for a few months. Recently came across this one at with the stone at a good price. The stone feels like a nice medium or slightly coarse grain. I do like that wavy pattern.

Scored some more this past weekend but this one was significant..... to me anyhow. It put a razor edge on
a couple knives with just a few strokes ::woot:: ::woot::

It's a fine grit with like a diamnod dust finish.... ::shrug:: that's the best I can describe it.

Found another old Case counter hone. This one is newer than my other one, probably 1970s era. Has the rectangular oil can which as far as I know is the last ones Case issued.

Thanks guys. Phil, the oil can on the newer one is about half full and the stone hasn't seen a lot of use. Haven't looked that close yet but suspect its can is not refillable. The can on the older one is empty but has a screw-on lid so it can be refilled easily.

I like those Case counter hones! They just have a cool factor, especially the older one.

Gino - nice bench stone. I usually use a two grit stone on my kitchen knives.

So it's TripleS (Sharpening Stones Scott) here again with this weekends haul.

The more I purchase....the more confised I get ::doh:: ::paranoid::

I gotta ask about the stone I singled out in the last pic. Is it a stone? It's like glass on one side.

Thanks for any info!
