Congrats carr! I have a Henry .22 myself with a 1968' mint in box Bushnell .22 scope my Dad had. I will be giving to my 6 year old grandson tomorrow after we shoot at the range with his Dad. Bought with the intent to give to him a couple of years ago.

The last 48 hours has seen some significant dollars dropped on gun and ammo.

500 rounds of .308
240 rounds of 7.62X51mm
5000 rounds of .22--- 36 grain "High Velocity" hollow points. Probably last beyond my lifetime.

And last but not least, a Smith and Wesson M&P .22 with hard case. Also picked up an additional 5 factory 12 round magazines to go with it. This gun is very light. Spec says 24 oz. but it sure doesn't feel even that heavy. Threaded barrel to add a surpressor if I want. Very comfortable in hand. Here is a link in case anyone is interested.

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/ ... rrorView_Y

As I said, headed to the range tomorrow. Maybe I will get some pics to post.

Regards, Jerry

P.S. Hope the wife doesn't find out. Not my normal MO but as they say "I would rather beg for foregiveness than ask for permission" on my purchases the last 2 days. She just doesn't get it as far as the need to do so.

Aww heck Mitch. We will shoot all that ammo up at the range in an hour and cook eggs on the barrels for breakfast. I assume that is #63 on the list. I consider it as "personal use".

Hope life is well. Regards, Jerry

Jerry, you're gonna love that S&W M&P 22. They're a blast to shoot - most fun pistol I have. ::tu:: Mine was a little sensitive to the kind of ammo until I put about 500 rounds through it. Had FTE about once per mag with standard velocity - it needs high velocity rounds. That loosened up the springs enough that afterward it shoots anything I feed it. Everybody that shoots it wants one.

Yes Sir Ken. Great .22 semi auto. What a fun shooter and smooth as silk. No recoil. First .22 handgun I have ever owned. Contrary to popular belief of some, a .22 can take down game of various sizes. Just like anything else, depends on shot placement. I see a Ruger 10-22 in my near future.

We popped of a few rounds today. .22, .45 and .308. We stayed on the 50 to 100 yard range and skipped the 100 to 400 yard range so my son and I could focus more on my grandson. I gifted him his first rifle today with of course the consent of his Mom and Dad. He is 6 years old. I bought a Henry .22 a couple of years ago with the intent of it being his. My wife didn't believe that story when I bought it but his parents said it was time if I wanted. Of course the gun will be in the safe so he has to have Dad to use or access it. Basically just mounted a mint new in box Bushnell .22 scope from 1968' production my Dad had and sighted it in. Had only about 25 rounds thru it.This little man will be a great hunter and outdoorsman when he get older. He went with Dad on his first hunt for Elk at 3 years old. He gets alittle angry if he is not allowed to go hunting because of school or whatever.
He is one happy kid today. Gifted it to him at the range including a soft carry case and some ammo.
Hopefully at some point I can find a youth .410 for him. This is what memories are made of in my opinion. Cant wait to give him his first knife. Already have some set aside for him including a Jaguar set (collection knives). Also some EDCs set aside already, just waiting for the appropriate time and OK from his parents.

The big boys had some trigger time today also of course. My son and I hammered a steel 3" plate at 100 yards with my DPMS Oracle .308 LR AR-10 consistently. I painted the plates prior to us shooting with orange flourescent paint. Works great. We shot about 40 rounds on the steel plate pics I added to this post. larger plate for quick warm up. I went beyond the suggested recommendation as far as "barrel break in". I made a believer out of my son on barrel break in. It is time consuming but well worth the effort. Consistent hits on a 12" plate at 400 yards all day long. I took this rifle Elk hunting 2 years ago. Unfortunately, 2000 yards was the closet Elk I saw. Will take it on future hunts for sure. I hope to get out to the a couple towns (135 miles away) over at some point where they have a 600 and 1200 yard range.

A few pics from the great day we had.

Regards, Jerry

Jerry, sounds like a great time was had by all. Grandson will really enjoy that Henry .22, for years to come. Great gift from granddad! You know what you're doing, and of course it's none of my business, but IMHO a 20 guage youth model (or a 28 guage if budget allows) is a better first shotgun than a .410. .410 is a tough gun to master - takes a pretty good shot to hit anything with that small thin pattern, something a novice shotgunner can find frustrating. Recoil from 20 guage isn't a lot different. Just a thought. Of course a lot depends on the age and size of the beginner, which you and his dad obviously know best. And glad ya'll enjoyed the M&P. ::tu::

Great point Ken on the shotgun. Will certainly consider that. I appreciate the input a lot my friend. Although still a little man he has hunting in his blood. His Mom says he was real excited when he brought his first gun home today. Says he wants to hunt birds soon. I am sure that will be a few years from now. Start them young as they say. Not forced but this is the little man's interest.

Jerry,
I'll "amen" Mumbleypeg's comment about the 410. A single barrel 20 ga youth shotgun will be a much better choice. I traded for one when my son started to hunt. It served him well and was easy to care for plus it was about the safest way to go. We've all seen kids having issues loading and unloading pumps and auto loaders. Safety first!

Then there is another issue or at least it was for me, 410 shot shells were 2 or 3 time as expensive as 20 ga shells. We started with clay pigeons hanging on a fence post, then clay pigeons from a hand trap, clay pigeons from a tire mounted trap, mourning doves sittin' in a sycamore tree and finally shootin' 'em in the air :) .
Just my 2 cents,

I'll add an Amen on 410. A single shot 410 was my first gun and hitting Doves rather escaped me.
Later in life using a Remington Pump 20 was murder on clay pigeons.
Never really got into hunting.

Jerry, my dad started my brother and I out on a .410 and to this day I still have a soft spot for them, even though I'm a die hard 16 gauge man in general now. I just bought my wife a minty 1949 Stevens 311 .410 double barrel. I love that thing.

But for my boys (my oldest is 10) even though they shot a .410 first, their first serious shotgunning was with a single shot 20 my dad bought. It's just a cheap New England, 26 inch modified barrel, and he cut the stock down about an inch and a half shorter than a youth model and installed a 1 inch pad. It's a real soft shooting little gun set up that way, and pretty safe being a single shot. (A shotgun too long will "kick" harder than one a tad short).

But please, get him a little .410 too! They're just too much fun!

Just some thoughts....

I have a little .410 pump. I guess if I was a rabbit hunter it might come in handy, but if it is a winged beast I am shooting at, the .410 is worthless to me. I can't hit anything flying through the air with that thing. Also, shells are $$$.

I have a couple of 20s, and love them both. The kick way less than my 12s, are light-weight for upland hunting, and they can do pretty much everything a 12 can do. The 20 is also a gun that they can hunt with the rest of their lives.....the .410 will probably be put in the safe when they get old enough for a 20 or a 12. I hunt and shoot with quite a few folks.....most carry 12s, a few carry 20s (and some alternate).....but no one I hunt with carries a .410. The .410 is just very limited in it's applications, and as such I would rather go with the 20 for my wife or kids.

I inherited my .410, so of course it will be passed down to my kids. I know there's lot's of love out there for .410s, but I guess I am just not a big fan....or maybe I am just a bad shot and need all the help I can get.

Thanks all for the detailed input on my grandson's first shotgun. Looks like I may sway towards a .20 gauge. But seeing his age and hunting aspiration I may get a .410 so he can start out on rabbits as he really is chomping at the bit to hunt. Get him used to whole shotgun experience. Even at his age, he has the bug! Then get him a .20 gauge as he is hot to hit the birds soon too.

Thanks again Guys!

Jerry,

You can't go wrong with a .410 for a boy's first shotgun.
My first was a Mossberg bolt action .410 which could shoot slugs.
Had it for several years.

Nice, Bob. Been on the scout for a good varmint gun I can take with me in the Polaris Ranger or in the cab of the tractor. I have a roof rack in both. Seems like every time I see a coyote I'm in one or the other of those (coyotes aren't afraid of either vehicle) but empty handed, or only have an old 12 ga., and they're out of range for that. A 223 would be perfect and the CZ would fit the bill, but pretty expensive for what I need. Been thinking about a Savage Axis in 223 or 243 - if I can find a good used one I'd buy it. Anyone got experience with, or know anything about the Axis, or have any other ideas?

Jerry,
Ive always loved my 410's. All single shots.
I dont like to buy the ammo though.
I think every boy needs a 410.
And a 20 ga.
And a 12 ga.
And a 16 ga.
And a 10 ga.
You get the idea..

I had, as a youth and still have, two Savage O/U rifle/shotguns, one in .22 long rifle over .410 3" and the other .22WRM over 20 gauge shotgun.

Both are excellent 1st or 2nd guns for your offspring, but the .22/.410 is the most useful re' actual hunting, I think. Perfect squirrel gun. Miss him with the .22, then blast him with the .410.
With all the above comments re' the cost of .410 shells, maybe the .22 WRM / 20 gauge is the better gun now.

I've had both these now for over 55 years. They still look new.

I used to be a solo squirrel hunter. No way I'd go into the woods before dawn now without a partner.

I remember one Thanksgiving weekend, I drove out to my favorite area before daylight, parked the truck and walked into the woods. I went to a spot I had hunted before and sat down within sight of a large, old mast oak tree.

Man, it was cold. Well below freezing.

As I sat there, leaning against a tree, I began to hear snow falling onto the dry leaves. It got harder and harder.

I sat there, bundled up in an Army field jacket with liner, Army OD scarf around my neck and Army black leather gloves with wool OD liners. Army OD "over-pants" on top of a pair of jeans. Leather work boots and cotton socks.

I was still cold beyond words.

I could not feel my feet.

When day broke enough that I could see, I realized my legs and feet were covered with a blanket of snow.

I looked at the big oak tree and said to myself, "Self, what the Hell are you doing out here?"

I stood up, shook off all the snow, walked back to the truck and went home.

No sense in being a fool about anything.
