I don't get on here as much as I once did, but when I have the opportunity I like to drop by and check on the success of my friends on this forum. It appears as though everyone had a good year with lots of memories collected in more than just your game pouches. I also was blessed with a few more memories this year.

I was able to break a dry spell that lasted a few seasons by taking this buck.

It is my biggest deer ever, not my best buck, but my biggest deer.

He came trotting out of a wooded lot on our neighbor's property and entered a small postage stamp field to our right. He had his head down in hopes to sneak out to the pines unnoticed by his pursuers, he would find safety there in the tall evergreens. As I raised my rifle he became aware that his presence had been noticed and he began a full run. I grunted and he froze, a few moments later he lay but a hundred yards from his wooden fortress.

I've been blessed with many opportunities to enjoy success in terms of deer on the ground, but after a few seasons where it seemed I was there "knowing" I would fill a tag, I lost some of my passion. The two previous seasons that ended with an empty tag and a freezer without venison really brought things back around and made me realize how truly blessed I was when I did get the opportunity to drop a deer.

Looks like a 700 has scored again. It's not a good feeling to have an empty freezer. Congratulations!

I bought a Rem. 700 right after deer season ended last fall. I don't have a scope on it yet. What's the scope on your gun and what caliber is your rifle ?

Phil, we ground a lot of this buck up being he was so big and honestly it's some of the best grind we have had.
I love my 700 and have had it for a few years now, I like the balance it has, it just seems to fit me. The rifle is a Win 243. topped with a Nikon 3x9x40 prostaff scope.

I like the way it shoots too.

I have a few Nikons sitting atop quite an arrange of rifles and I think they are some of the best.

Treefarmer, I've been wanting to stop in and write to you guys for some time, I just never seem to make it on. Things are going extremely well for me and the family, it just so happens that thing are really busy too. I grew up on venison because outside the cost of a tag, it was virtually free here on the farm. Harvesting your own meat and butchering it to your own specifications really is a rewarding job for me and my family.

I was able to bag a few bushytails this season as well, which led to an awesome meal.
Squirrel season is one of my favorites because it allows me to be in the woods at the best time of the year, in my opinion anyhow.

Squirrels will teach you patience as well, especially with a 22. cal rifle in hand.

As I was retrieving the grey, the old fox crawled down and barked as loud as he could until he got my attention. Stupidity is often mistaken for bravery and he found that out when I finally picked him out amongst the tree branches.

What do you think of this rack? One of my friends busted him Sunday afternoon with a 270. He was guilty of runnin' a doe past a tree stand, so he had to die .
Rut still goin' strong in this part of the Panhandle!

That is one crazy looking rack there Treefarmer Not sure if that upshoot would be the main beam on that side, or if it is just a wild sprout that sprang up unrelated to the rest of the rack. Betcha he could have held his own fightin' with the other bucks though! He could just skewer 'em like a kabob!

-11 degrees this morning...perfect day to go play in the woods. Getting late in winter now, might not get many more days with this kind of life affirming, bone chilling, soul cleansing cold. Love it. Stopped and made a little fire to warm up and have a hot beverage. Only had matches on me so I just used some dry oak leaves that were still clinging to the branches as tinder and some dead twigs that were up off the ground and she fired right up. Kind of windy so had to pick a naturally sheltered spot.

True scope story.. I have 2 friends that swore that the older Redfields were they way to go.. I swear by Leupold.. Finally both saw the light and got Leupolds.. Now all I hear from them is how bright and clear the Leupolds are and that they should have listened to me 10yrs ago.. I just smile!! john

Tomorrow (Sat) is our last day of bunny hunting.. Supposed to get 1-3in snow on top of whats out there (4-6).. Hope all goes well.. Did not get out much this season since I don't have a hound in the hunt since my little girl passed 2 yrs ago!! We still run 3 hounds (friends) so will roust them Wabbits!! John

Well.. With the snow coming down HARD I decided to end my season early.. Nasty out and supposed to get 6-8in more on top of the 4in that's already there.. Thinking them bunnies are gonna be a tuff find.. John
