Weidmannsheil Stag Question

Hello everyone,

I have just purchased a Weidmannsheil stag canoe. It is a beautiful well made knife but... I noticed that if I rub my thumb across the stag some color transfers to my thumb. The knife is a beautful knive and I really don't think it is a forgery, but wonder if anyone has seen stag do this. Unfortunately I don't have capture with me, but can post some tonight.

hey bluemax, i think your knife has been parkerized.

sorry, i don't know why your stg would rub off unless it was enhanced after final polishing at the factory. i believe parker's owns the name and all their remaining stock parts. i have some parker's cats. with many he had for sale. a lot were assembled after purchase of the company with spares from the factory. i believe i read this in jim parker's book "knife collectors's encyclopedia". jim parker is responcible for a great deal of modern knife collecting. good or bad.

That looks like a Bulldog Lockback Canoe, few hundred prototypes but no production in 1995.

about 4 1/2"
pretty heavy. feels very well made. Blade is labeled Wiedmannsheil Solingen Germany and has the boar head.. and is a lockback canoe

Just looking at the picture, I can't tell if it's bone stag, or winterbottom, or second cut, etc. Many times I can't tell the difference between bone stag, winterbottom, or second cut on the Parker's stuff from a picture. Seems like the names get used interchagably, whether right or wrong.

Doesn't look like just stag.

Rubs off, badly dyed bone.

It looks kinda like bone stag to me. It sure is a good looking pocket knife. I don't think I have ever seen a lock back canoe before. Very nice!! Thanks for the pic.

I think Johnnie and Hukk are right on with regard to your canoe.

Jim Parker bought the rights to Weidmannsheil and also all of the inventory. What Hukk is referring to is the prototypes that Bulldog made in 1995 that were 4 1/2 inch lockbacks. Good quality knives. Yours was probably made on that frame with a Weidmannsheil blade. I too question whether that is genuine stag , winterbottom, whatever.

Must be some dye somewhere for it to come off on your hand.

That is a debate for another forum.
I am sure that it is a nice knife. By the way, I like that term 'Parkerized" and you are right, like it or not, his influence will be felt throughout the years.

That looks like it might be bonestag. I bought a Weidmannsheil that was advertised as "stag" and it turned out to be bonestag, and it looks similar to that.

I've also bought Weidmansheill knives that were genuine bark stag, so don't take my answer as definitive.

Regardless, my experience with Weidmannsheil knives has been good. I'm not a big fan of Parkers in general, but I'm a bigger fan of Olbertz factory knives, which yours no doubt is. I avoid the new production Bulldog brand, but I feel safe buying Weidmannsheil, Fightn Rooster, Shapleighs and Eye Brand, all of which are made by the Olbertz factory in Solingen Germany.

Nice knife, regardless.

thanks for the info. I also emailed Perry Miller and it sounds as though everyone is pretty much saying the same thing. Parker and others sometimes dyed rather than torched their stag, so it may rub off. Not really a problem and I am still happy with the knife.
