Yet Another Ebay Deal Gone Bad !!!

I bought and paid right away a Marble's stag knife on ebay saturday,,,It was a buy it now,,,
I knew the knife was at least 1/2 to 3/4 to low priced, I think they looked at prices
and compaired it to the china stuff selling, and then set their price
I get up sunday and my order is canceled and paypal money refunded
I go to purchased items, NOTHING !!! just seller canceled order,
No recourse at all, no feedback button there, no contact ebay cause of a problem,
nothing at all !!!
How can a seller get away with this ???
If you do not pay etc. as a buyer, they got tons of recourse
How can a seller get away with this if they welch on a deal, its suppose to be a contract ???

Did you get the eBay and PayPal emails confirming your purchase? If so, the "item number" should be in there. Call eBay and raise cane. 866-643-1587

Marraige is supposed to be a contract and people get divorced every day....

Now, with that said.....that seller is a dirtbag. I would contact him (the seller) and tell him if he doesn't send you what you paid for you will do the following:
1). Announce him as a seller to black list here on AAPK.
2). Announce it via Facebook as a seller to black list.
3). Announce it via Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media sites.
4). Post your experience with him/her in the eBay forums as a seller to block
5). Block him/her
6). Contact ebay

I had that happen to me one time.....

In addition I also sold an item for half of what it should have sold for, but I smacked myself in the head as my customer threw a party. Sometimes as a seller sh!t happens, but you don't take it out on your customer....IMHO.

I had that happen last week and contacted the seller , he said his girlfriend made a mistake on the B I N price . I was way upset but did after talking with him believe his story..... we did come to an agreement and I bought the knife at twice the price , still a good deal . There was no recourse with ebay and the item still shows sold at the original price. go figure .

It seems to me that many people have no clue about ethics. They don't seem to even have any idea what the honorable thing to do is, much less desire to do it.

If I put an item up for sale and somehow grossly underpriced it, I'd take my loss and consider it a lesson learned the hard way. What I would not even think of doing would be to cancel the sale or try to negotiate a higher price AFTER it had already sold. After all, a deal's a deal. Just because you've come up on the short end of it, you're not excused from following through on the transaction.

Never had it happen on eBay, but have on Amazon marketplace sellers. Had another one yesterday on some sling swivels. Price was low compared to all others, order confirmed and shortly after was cancelled due to "out of stock". It was in stock when I ordered. I think the dealer made a mistake in pricing and didn't realize it until he received an order. Same could have happened on your eBay deal and the seller just didn't want to honor the price.

I have purchased item through Ebay's bin and auction only to be told by the sellers it was already sold should not have been re-listed,damaged when they checked the stock.After getting a postage quote than purchase the item was than told they don't post to my country.(than if I did not cancel the order they put a extra $100 on the postage than report me to Ebay for not paying for the item )It happens with about 1 to 2 percent of my Ebay purchases.I have no other choice than Ebay as the don't have many knife shows here.
Every time this has happened the seller had to send a request to cancel the order .If they did not send a request to cancel the order Ebay kept sending messages to pay for the item.
I found the best way was to report them to Ebay.
If you go to your local store and see a item with the price marked on it even if the store made a mistake and under priced the item ,that is all you pay ( That's how it works in Australia ).

Thanks guys for all your responses...seller now says that a mistake
was made by him and he did not have the knife, he sold it already.
I printed out the auction with color pics, I will be able to tell
if he relists for more money by the character of the stag.
Figured I would wait till today or tommorow to call ebay Jerry
with monday being a bad phone day for long waits.
All I know is for now ebay is OK with it and let him cancel order with no recourse
from my end at all, and Phil is right, you make a mistake, take it like a man and own up to it.
Having my AAPK store here(what a blessing) for 9 years, I did that once and sold
it at a 50 buck loss...ebay is a whole different monster tho.

I had it happen to me back when I was collecting ZIPPO lighters, except it went the other direction. Guy had listed a 1946 ZIPPO for $10 BIN, should have been $50-75. I bought it and all he said was, "you just got a great deal". Took my $10 and sent me the lighter.

Sarah and I bought her a 1996 Mazda Miata in 2000. It had only an AM/FM radio and cassette tape player.

A year or two later I found, on Ebay, a factory Mazda/Bose AM/FM. Cassette and CD player. I bought it for $130.00, as a surprise for Sarah.

Before the item even arrived at our home, Sarah found a 2000 Miata Special Edition she wanted and we traded the '96 for it. It had a great Bose sound system.

So, I listed the $130.00 sound unit back on Ebay, but being totally new at Ebay selling, I neglected to put a "reserve" on it.

It sold for $3.50.

I shipped it to the high bidder.

Never even crossed my mind to do otherwise.

My loss, his gain.

He probably still talks about that bargain.

One can get burned selling on Ebay. One can also post an item that goes for far more than its value due to a bidding war. You need to be prepared to accept both events with grace and move on.

That's the way it works here in the States too. Linnea's middle daughter has gotten into coupons and price matching in a huge way (you should see some of the stuff she gets for next to nothing). Just last week she saw an ad where Walmart had mispriced some beef Jerky. In the ad, it was the large sticks for 1¢ each. She bought all they had and Walmart honored the ad.


Charlie, the first thing I sold on eBay, the shipping cost me more than I got for the item. (I can laugh about it now.)

I have the same type of thing happen on eBay, the seller sees he is not going to get what he thought out of a knife and pulls it at the last min. It is wrong, wrong, wrong.

It's happened to me too and it burns my butt. I don't like to leave negative feedback but have both times in these situations. Here is what someone with knowledge says on the subject.

What you should have done was check the seller's feedback profile BEFORE bidding on an item. Since most of the sellers who do what you have decribed, are new ones, you can find that out by checking to see if their feedback says they have done this before, OR if they have made any sales at all prior to yours.



New sellers are encouraged to "Start items at a low price to encourage bidding" by eBay, more than once in the start selling information. Those who take that advice, usually end up either losing money and giving away the item, or canceling the sale, and relisting. Usually, they learn after their first sale/cancelation, to use a start price that is the least amount they are willing to accept for the item.



Yes, he explained that because I was the only bidder the auction didn't generate enough money. In other words, he didn't make enough profit. But he's the one who set the starting bid price.



Enough profit, or any profit? Or is it possible they were going to take a loss after paying the eBay fees.

Yes he was the one who set the price, but as I said above, they may have taken eBay's bad advice to start items at a very low price.

Ask yourself, what you would do if you took the advice, trusting what eBay says about encouraging bids, and only got 1 bid? Would you complete the transaction if the item was worth much more that the first bid?



Don't you wish you could just cancel the sale everytime you don't make enough profit? Suppose everyone did that. No sales are binding. Just honor the ones you want. Please, someone explain how and why this is possible.



eBay does not back this behavior, but they also have no way of forcing a seller to go through with a transaction. The seller is going to be charged the final value fees for the listing, so they will lose money on the transaction. eBay does allow a seller to do this once a year, and get a pass on the fees, but most newbies do not know that, so they end up paying the fees.

The seller is also going to get a "defect" on their account, and if they do it again, those may be enough to cause them to be banned from selling on the site.



Did the relist for the item have a price that was more in line with making a profit or at least not losing money on the sale? If so then the seller did learn their lesson.

You stated that the knife was way undervalued on its Buy it Now price and the seller probably canceled the transaction as soon as he received notice that the knife sold, so I believe that there was a mistake in the listing.

With that said, here's my opinion:

As the seller: I would try and contact the buyer right away and explain my mistake, but if they insisted mistake or not, they wanted the knife at that price, I would take the loss and honor the sale.

As the buyer: If the seller contacted me stating that they made a mistake, because I knew that the knife was way undervalued I would believe them and let them off the hook.

The one thing I would never do is to use social media to try to blacklist them over a possible mistake on an eBay listing.

FOR ME..... BOTH TIMES, LIKE YOU, PAID THEN ITEM GONE(COMPLETELY!!!)...THIN AIR,NO TRAIL!!!

BOTH TIMES.........= SOMEONE HAD NOTIFIED EBAY THAT THE SELLER WAS SELLING "FAKE/COUNTERFEIT" ITEM........... EBAY TAKES THEIR SWEET TIME TO GET TO STUFF,AND DIDNT GET TO MY ITEM TILL PAID FOR,BUT NOT SHIPPED!!!!!!

I was reading this forum yesterday, And thinking i had been lucky on bay i guess,
Well bought one in the morning Monday and in the evening got a refund notice, When
i asked the seller why? He stated that selling it for a friend and he could not find it..
HE HAS A 7000 FEED BACK , So first time for everything lol

Ebay wants the community to police itself and sit back and rake in the $. If the buyer and seller can work things out so much the better. If people get ripped off and don't leave bad feedback or low numbers then the same sellers continue to look like all stars. Look in the counterfeit forum and read about Myrtle Faye - is that the right name? He gets by with murder because no one will leave him the feedback he is due. Leave bad sellers the numbers and comments they deserve. Things will have to improve.

Well alot of similar comments to my expirence on ebay...
I posted this at the time was very disapointed that I missed out
on a great 4 pin stag knife at a rock bottom price..
seller emailed me yesterday and said he was sorry 3 times..
gonna just leave it at that and forget about it...
was not the 1st knife deal that went sour, and if you trade enough,
it will not be the last.
AAPK is there for all of us to vent our joy & sorrow in this wonderfull
addiction we call knife collecting...
I do not and have not ever joined any social networks, AAPK is it for me
and I truly feel blessed I have been a part of Bryan's brainchild for over 9 years !!!
