The August meeting was called to order by Mike Lancia, President with no guests. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and corrected to Great Eastern Knife. Treasurer’s report was given and placed on file subject to audit. Lou Kubiak reported on the club knives and our inventory of knives donated for special occasions.

Dale Warther reported the dates of February 9-10, 2008 on the next Expo. Applications will be mailed out later in the year.

The theme for the meeting was “Your Favorite Club Knives,” and Dale Brion brought in several of his K-BARs—a 1981 Coke Bottle, a 1990 with K-BAR’s attempt at celluloid, a 1983 K-BAR peanut and a 1995 WRCA swing guard. Denny Lutton displayed a WRCA 1992 anniversary knife with Mercury Dime, a multi-tool he bought from Mike Lancia and several Cattaragus’ in a box. Denny said he recently learned that part of the grading of knives involves the sideways movement of the blade.

Glen Graham collects pearl and brought a 1989 WRCA 15th anniversary club knife with pearl handles that is by far his favorite. Lou Kubiak displayed a Hubertus automatic 1996 WRCA club knife and a 1984 Hen & Rooster NKCA club knife. Ed Steele brought in three WRCA anniversary knives—10th, 15th and 20th. Ed noted that on the 2002 Anniversary knife with the Walking Liberty half dollar the inside of the liners have been engine-turned like the blades.

Charlie Clifford had a 2005 Marbles 8” Ideal with bone handles and a 2006 Marbles club knife that is a cowboy pattern with jigged/straight bone handles. Gary Breckenridge had a nice hobo mother of pearl. Gary stayed at the Caboose Motel when he went to Titusville and he bought a Queen knife that displays first rate workmanship. Gary along with several others toured the Great Eastern Cutlery Co. and were impressed.

Carl Young likes a lot of pattern so he brought in a WRCA Expo knife with Picasso Marble and a trapper from Alabama that could be considered for a club knife. Mike Lancia had a 1997 Fightin’ Rooster swing-guard canoe and a 1977 Palmetto Cutlery Club three-blade mother of pearl with textured bolsters.

Bob Novak is a newer member who says he hasn’t had time to collect many club knives but he brought in a nice 1991 WRCA with mother of pearl handles.

Ed Steele gave a report on his trip to the Queen Show. Friday morning they took a tour of the Great Eastern Cutlery Club. The tour guide was Ken Daniels, one of the owners. Each of the employees can do several jobs. The other owner left Queen with 30 years experience and he does much of the assembly work on the knives. The factory is set up in a horseshoe with separate rooms for each operation in assembly and packing. Ryan Daniels is the sales manager for Great Eastern. Many of you may remember Ken and Ryan Daniels from our Expo’s in the tent. Ryan had a beautiful display of Fightin’ Roosters. Ed said the Queen show was only two blocks from the motel and breakfast looked like a knife show.
It was suggested by several members that an excellent way to advertise our club without spending any money is to wear your member badge. Some members have ball caps and t-shirts as well. We are checking into patches with the club logo and will report later.

Book Description
Nestled in a remote area of northwestern Pennsylvania, the small town of Tidioute became home to five cutlery manufacturers starting in the late-1800s. Although no longer in existence, these businesses produced some of the finest collectible knives and razors ever.
Tidioute: A Town With an Edge relates the history and development of this unique stronghold of cutlery companies and how they competed with one another in the area known as the “Magic Circle” of cutlery firms. These manufacturers included the Tidioute Cutlery Co. (LTD), Union Razor/Union Cutlery, Baldwin Cutlery, Tidioute Cutlery Co. and Penn Cutlery.
With an ardent sense of detail, David Anthony shows how the cutlery tradition was handed down over multiple generations and involved keen business sense mixed with tragedy and luck. Anthony also includes photos of the various tang stamps used by the companies and a price guide to help determine the value of cutlery from this historic town.

The “Missing Link” has been found! Just finished reading David Anthony’s recent offering “Tidioute Pocket Knives, The Town With An Edge”, which rather then doting on a specific brand, tells about the story of the cutlery industry in and around Warren County borough of Tidioute, PA. The brand names, the cutlers, the founders, the markings the dates and the relationships to various cutlery industries in western PA and NY (even Ohio). This book has tied together so many loose ends that have just been ‘waving in the breeze’ for nearly a century. The research and the end results are outstanding. This book is a “must have”, not only for the casual collector and serious entrepreneur alike but also for those of us who are familiar with today’s Tidioute and feel at home there.
