Garden City (NY?) Cutlery Co. Ever heard of it?
I found this pearl whittler with all three blades marked as shown. 1 secondary blade has "germany" also. The stamps looks very late 19th century to me and I'm guessing this could have been made under contract for a usa co. Anyone else know anything about this company? I found a couple straight razors listed from International Cutlery Co. In garden city New York also marked Germany. See photos. Any info?

Cool knife with a rare stamp!
I have no information on the company, but narrowing down who contracted it may prove difficult. A search on Wikipedia shows over a dozen places in the US called Garden City.

Yes, i've seen the list of 13 Garden City's. I still gravitate to NY as the most likely but Kansas, and Georgia make me wonder. So much more was going on in the NE cutlery wise.

Goins has a listing for Garden City Cutlery Co. - gives dates from 1890 to 1910, but absolutely no other information. Levine's does not have a listing for that name. Stewart and Ritchie (fifth edition) lists it with the same dates (1890 - 1910) and give the country of origin as Austria, with no other information.
Looks like a nice old knife.

Interesting! So, are either of those located within listings categorized by country... ie USA companies, etc?

After WWI, German knife manufacturers were loathe to put their actual names on cutlery bound for the USA, so they came up with all kinds of All American, Apple Pie kinds of names to market their products. Anything to dispel the animus toward the dreaded Huns of Verdun.
That could be a Kastor brand or any one of a dozen other importers and the actual German maker is most likely lost to history.
When I hear "Garden City" the first thing that comes to mind is New Jersey.

Nope, the only country info that I could come up with is Austria, the same info as the pic that junebug posted out of Stewart and Ritchie.accujohn wrote:Interesting! So, are either of those located within listings categorized by country... ie USA companies, etc?
