Our dog was born in 2010 and has been to the vet for shots and annual check ups regularly. She has been on a Heart Guard monthly dose but some how we messed up and missed the December and January ::facepalm:: doses.

A few weeks ago she had her annual check up and tested positive for heart worms. The vet did a 2nd blood test and sent it to a lab that confirmed the presence of mature worms. The vet suggested treatment and it was started Tuesday morning. We had to leave her at the vet's till Wednesday evening. She is supposed to have 30 days of rest, no excitment. This will be a job.

Reading up on heart worms, I discovered they have been found in dogs in all 50 states, not just in the South, but anywhere mosquitoes are found. We had heard folks say they had even been told by a vet, that in the winter they do not need the medication. Apparently that ain't true! Just wanted to share our learning experience in hopes that someone can profit from our error.

Here's a picture of Flossie, confined to the screen porch, watching Miss Joy feeding the birds and squirrels. Notice the shaved spot on her back where for the injections.

This is my dog Josi. She is pure bred Lhasa Apso and she is 8 years old. We kind of became very attached when she was a puppy and had puppy strangles. I had to keep her isolated from the rest of the letter for 6 weeks. So for 6 weeks every time I took a nap she would sleep on my chest. She was about a 2 pound ball of fuzz at the time. I think the puppy strangles took a lot out of her and she is starting have what appears to be joint problems. I have to get her into the vet next week, her shoulders seem to be bothering her.

Gus is 10 years old and going strong!

Thank you Phil. We keep them cut short because 3 Lhasas are way too much work to keep them brushed out with a long coats. We did keep Gus longer when he was the only dog we had, but brushing out 3 Lhasas every day is too time consuming.

This is Gus as a puppy, he was about 6 months in this picture.

This is Josi at about 2 months when she was so sick. She lost hair around her eyes, nose and mouth from the puppy strangles. She still has eye problems and she only has partial vision on one eye. She is the most loyal and faithful dog I have ever seen. If I go somewhere and can't take her she waits on the back of the couch looking out the window or sits at the door waiting for me to come home.

So do mine!
First they chew through the squeaker then they rip out the stuffing.
The ones without stuffing seem to last longer.

My heart is heavy tonight. I had to say farewell to my best friend Bud today. He was a poodle mix that I've had for over 15 years. He was my constant companion, following me from room to room here in the house and, back before he got too unsteady to ride, travelling hundreds and hundreds of miles with me as my "navigator" standing up between the front seats. He had endured being run over and having to have a hip joint removed and having bladder stones surgically removed three times. In recent years he'd lost bladder control and had to wear a pad around his midsection day and night. He'd lost his hearing and most of his vision. He'd become so weak I had to carry him up and down our steps so he could go outside. What tipped the scale was that he began to show signs of bladder stones once again. I had the vet take an Xray today that veriifed they were back once again. I could not stand to see my friend suffer any more so the vet gave him two shots and we let him drift away into eternity.

Phil, my sincere condolences for the loss of your friend Bud. Been there, done that, so I know exactly how you feel. Reading your post brings back the memories I have. Just know that you were there for him when he passed and you did the right thing for him. The pain of losing him will subside eventually but the memories of the "good times" will remain. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear of your loss Phil, my dog is my best friend also. I had to put my last dog down 3 years ago because of serious advanced health issues and all I can tell you is to get another. I swore I would never get another after my last because he was such a great companion but after 6 mos I finally got another and now after almost 3 years I think this one is the best dog I ever owned.

Philco,
Went back in this thread and found a picture of Bud and some of his buddies that were with you at that time. Sorry for your loss of a special companion. Dogs seem to enrich our lives if we allow them to become part of us. Recently read somewhere, a man's prayer was, "Lord let me be half the man my dog thinks I am."
